An antisera for the fluorescent labeling of mouse amelogenesis.

Embryonic mammalian enamel extracellular matrix is immunogenic. Antisera has been produced in New Zealand white rabbits using 5-day-old (post-natal) C57B1/6J mandibular and maxillary incisor and molar tooth organs as immunogens. The expression of secretory amelogenesis in mouse molar tooth organs was studied from the "cap stage" (circa 17-day fetus) to the fifth day of postnatal odontogenesis using indirect immunofluorescent microscopy.

Immunization with culture supernatant in experimental amoebic meningoencephalitis.

Mice were immunized with 0.25 ml culture supernatant intraperitoneally and challenged with 5 x 10(4) Naegleria fowleri intranasally. Survival rate was 11% after one and 25% after three immunizing doses, compared to 0% in controls.

Effect of mefloquine on the immune response in mice.

The effect of mefloquine, a new antimalarial compound, on the immune response in mice was studied in vitro and in vivo. Slight inhibition of mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferative responses was observed at a concentration of 1 microgram/ml, and marked cytotoxicity at 4 microgram/ml. In contrast, a higher proportion of human lymphocytes remained viable at the same concentration of mefloquine.

Ventricular performance and myocardial water content during hemodilution in dogs.

To determine the effect of ischemia on myocardial clearance of thallium-201 (201Tl), we studied 12 dogs with ischemia produced after the injection of Tl. Tl was given I.V.

Coronary blood flow in experimental canine left ventricular hypertrophy.

To determine whether left ventricular hypertrophy [LVH] altered total and regional coronary blood flow, we inflated a balloon around the ascending aorta of nine dogs; six acute and six sham-operated dogs were controls. After 6 weeks, all dogs were studied with an open chest under anesthesia; the balloons were deflated. There was moderate LVH as shown by increased left ventricular weight and fiber diameter.

The microbial metabolism of Cl compounds. The stoicheiometry of respiration-driven proton translocation in Pseudomonas AM1 and in a mutant lacking cytochrome c.

This paper clarifies the role of cytochrome c in Pseudomonas AM1 by measuring the stoicheiometry of proton translocation driven by respiration of endogenous or added substrates in wild-type bacteria and in a mutant lacking cytochrome c (mutant PCT76). The maximum -->H(+)/O ratio (protons translocated out of the bacteria per atom of oxygen consumed during respiration) was about 4 and, except when respiration was markedly affected, this ratio was similar in mutant and wild-type bacteria. The -->H(+)/O ratios were unaltered when the usual oxidase (cytochrome a(3)) was inhibited by 300mum-KCN and respiration involved the single cytochrome b functioning as an alternative oxidase.

The effect of chloroplast coupling factor removal on thylakoid membrane ion permeability.

Removal of coupling factor protein (CF1) from spinach thylakoid membranes results in an enhancement of proton permeability but has no effect on chloride or potassium permeability. Anion permeability was measured by the rate of thylakoid packed volume changes. Potassium permeability was monitored by turbidity changes, packed thylakoid volume changes and ion flux studies using 86Rb+ as a tracer.

Immune function at diagnosis in relation to responses to therapy in acute lymphocytic leukemia of childhood.

Tests of immune capacity were performed on blood from 49 children with newly diagnosed, untreated acute lymphocytic leukemia, and relation to prognosis was determined. Patients were treated with multiple-drug therapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation. Median follow-up time was 16 mo (range 10--37 mo).

Effects of acid-base changes, hypoxia, and catecholamines on ventricular performance.

Extracellular pH changes were produced in dogs with tris (hydroxy-methyl)-aminomethane (Tris) or NaHCO3 in the presence or absence of hypoxemia and before and after beta-adrenergic blockade with propranolol. Ventricular performance (VP) was evaluated by measurement of maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure (dp/dt max) and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure in the canine right heart bypass preparation with aortic pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output held constant. Low pH diminished VP.

The echocardiogram of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve (ECHO) was compared to hemodynamic and cineroentgenographic data to evaluate its accuracy in timing mitral valve (MV) opening and closure, and to validate it as an indicator of MV motion. The ECHO, high speed cineroentgenography at 250 frames/sec, and/or measurement of intracardiac pressures allowed accurate timing of the events of MV motion in dogs on right heart bypass. The intersection of left ventricular and left atrial pressures in early diastole preceded the onset of rapid anterior motion of ECHO (D' point) by 17 to 33 plus or minus 7.
