Active learning is a useful tool to enhance student engagement and support learning in diverse educational situations. We aimed to assess the efficacy of an active learning approach within a large interprofessional first year Medical Cell Biology module taken by six healthcare programmes across the School of Biomedical Sciences at Ulster University, United Kingdom. An active learning approach was developed for weekly formative assessment using Smartwork to design a weekly interactive multiple-choice quiz to reinforce key concepts specifically for each lecture.

Clinician trainings have been found to result in an increase of knowledge and attitudes. This study utilizes Normalization Process theory (NPT) to evaluate a clinician training program and its effects on practice.

However, autistic individuals and their families also reported lower satisfaction with health care service delivery. Previous studies described health care experiences of autistic adults, but less is known about those of autistic adolescents and young adults.

Methods: A primary care pediatrician received DBP minifellowship training 6 hours per week for 1 year to become a developmentally-trained primary care clinician (DT-PCC). DT-PCCs then conducted developmental evaluations that consisted of using a Childhood Autism Rating Scale and Brief Observation of Symptoms of Autism to evaluate children 4 years and younger referred within the practice.
Purpose: We developed and validated a measure assessing quality of life (QOL) through importance, attainability, and discrepancy of life goals among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with and without cancer. A specific goal-based QOL measure for AYA fills a critical gap in knowledge for AYA who are at a unique life stage, which may include shifts in priorities and goals.
Methods: Through review of our existing AYA databases on goals, the literature, and cognitive interviews we developed the MAYA-GQOL.
Objectives: Autistic individuals report lower health care satisfaction. However, there is currently no set of "best practice" standards about caring for autistic individuals. In this exploratory study, we aim to identify features of Autism Friendly practice according to a sample consisting of mainly professionals whose interests include autism using a modified 3-round Delphi-a method that identifies a consensus view across subject participants.

Few studies have examined the complex contributions to pain among AYA. We aimed to fill a gap by (1) identifying subgroups of AYA with distinct patterns of pain severity and interference over time and (2) explore possible predictors of these patterns.

The primary aim of this study was to determine the relation among sociodemographic factors, cumulative effects, and transition beliefs/expectations and goals, and the moderating role of health competence beliefs in AYA survivors of childhood cancer.
Methods: A total of 195 AYAs (aged 15-29) reported sociodemographic information, completed the Transition Readiness Inventory assessing positive beliefs/expectations and goals related to transition, and completed the Health Competence Beliefs Inventory assessing health perceptions, healthcare satisfaction, cognitive competence, and autonomy.
Past studies indicate that many autistic youth benefit from support with developing social relationships, exploring leadership opportunities, and engaging in post-secondary education. Teens Engaged as Mentors (TEAM) is an innovative mentoring program that provides socialization and community engagement opportunities in a safe environment for youth with and without autism. This qualitative study explored how participants and their caregivers perceived participation in TEAM.

One possible way to improve powder solubility is through the creation of vacuoles and pores in the particle structure using high pressure gas injection during spray drying. The aim of this study was to determine whether changes in particle morphology effect physical properties, such as hydration, water sorption, structural strength, glass transition temperature, and α-relaxation temperatures.

Furthermore, the chlorination process requires specialised infrastructure, management and high costs. In this research paper a potential alternative sterilisation technique was investigated.

However, its ability to generate stimulus-responsive cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), is compromised by tumour hypoxia. Here we describe a robust means of preparing a pH-sensitive polymethacrylate-coated CaO nanoparticle that is capable of transiently alleviating tumour hypoxia.

Purpose: Guided by a mHealth engagement framework, we evaluated contextual predictors of objective engagement with an app for adolescents and young adults (AYA) who survived cancer.
Methods: One hundred and ten AYA survivors (M age = 20.
Background: Self-management interventions for adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of childhood cancer are needed. The present study reports on the acceptability and feasibility of delivering survivorship care plans (SCPs) and an accompanying app to AYA.
Procedure: AYA (n = 224) ages 15-29 who completed treatment for cancer were randomized and received a digital SCP only or an SCP plus a mobile app intended to enhance self-management.
One current strategy to deal with the serious issue of antibiotic resistance is to use biosurfactants, weak antimicrobials in their own right, with antibiotics in order to extend the efficacy of antibiotics. Although an adjuvant effect has been observed, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. To investigate the nature of the antibiotic and biosurfactant interaction, we undertook a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) microscopic study of the effects of the tetracycline antibiotic, combined with sophorolipid and rhamnolipid biosurfactants, on Methicillin-resistant using tetracycline concentrations below and above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

To guide the development of future mHealth interventions, we describe the application of the agile science framework to iteratively develop a mHealth intervention for adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of childhood cancer.
Methods: We created the AYA STEPS mobile app (AYA Self-management via Texting, Education, and Plans for Survivorship) by modifying and integrating two existing programs: an online survivorship care plan (SCP) generator and a text messaging self-management intervention for AYA off treatment.
Pterygium is a pathological proliferative condition of the ocular surface, characterised by formation of a highly vascularised, fibrous tissue arising from the limbus that invades the central cornea leading to visual disturbance and, if untreated, blindness. Whilst chronic ultraviolet (UV) light exposure plays a major role in its pathogenesis, higher susceptibility to pterygium is observed in some families, suggesting a genetic component. In this study, a Northern Irish family affected by pterygium but reporting little direct exposure to UV was identified carrying a missense variant in CRIM1 NM_016441.

New emollients have been introduced recently and are assumed to be therapeutically interchangeable with the innovator products because, superficially, they appear to have similar compositions. This study compares a) the ex vivo human skin occlusion performance and b) the visual and microscopic properties of Isomol gel (IMG) and Doublebase gel (DBG).

Objectives: Insulin was used to evaluate effects of formulation parameters on minimizing diameter, maximizing encapsulation efficiency and preserving blood glucose control following intraperitoneal (IP) administration.
Methods: Homogenization or sonication was used to incorporate insulin into poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles with increasing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) content.
Unlabelled: A PLGA-based multifunctional biodegradable nanoparticle platform co-harboring hematoporphyrin and indocyanine green has been developed. In vitro studies demonstrate ultrasound and light stimulated generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species. In vivo studies show that the ICG component facilitates nIR fluorescence imaging that demonstrates accumulation of IV- administered nanoparticles in tumours.
