Mean fasting postoperative pancreatic polypeptide levels significantly decreased to 136 +/- 36 pg/ml, with decreases occurring in 12 of 13 patients who had had markedly elevated preoperative values. Parietal cell vagotomy and truncal vagotomy produced significant reductions in both fasting pancreatic polypeptide levels and in the glucose-stimulated pancreatic polypeptide response during the first 60 minutes.

A patient with a tumour containing clinically non-expressive somatostatin (SRIF) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was studied in vivo with basal and tolbutamide-provoked SRIF and VIP measurements and failed to respond to tolbutamide infusion. An acute cell dispersion model was used to study this tumour after resection. Incubation of tumour cells in tolbutamide (2 mg/ml) resulted in increases in intracellular SRIF but not in the levels of SRIF released into the incubating medium.

Platelets from diabetic subjects synthesized significantly greater quantities of 12-HETE than did platelets from control subjects when 12-HETE synthesis was induced by thrombin or collagen, either in the presence or absence of indomethacin. Platelet conversion of exogenously added arachidonic acid (AA) to 12-HETE was not significantly different between the diabetic and control groups in the absence of indomethacin, although a small but significant increase in the conversion of AA to 12-HETE was present in the diabetic group platelets when indomethacin was added to the reaction.
