Objective: The aim of this research was to determine how common gout flares are after ceasing anti-inflammatory prophylaxis.
Methods: A rapid literature review and meta-analysis were undertaken. PubMed was searched from inception to February 2024.
Various zoonotic microorganisms cause reproductive problems such as abortions and stillbirths, leading to economic losses on farms, particularly within livestock. In South Africa, bovine brucellosis is endemic in cattle, and from 2013-2018, outbreaks of Brucella melitensis occurred in sable. Coxiella burnetii, the agent responsible for the zoonotic disease known as Q-fever and/or coxiellosis, also causes reproductive problems and infects multiple domestic animal species worldwide, including humans.

Study Design: Prespecified subcohort analysis of a randomized controlled trial.
Setting & Participants: A substudy of the STOP Gout Trial in participants with CKD.
Packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion has been shown to increase nosocomial infection risk in the injured population; however, the post-traumatic infectious risk profiles of non-PRBC blood products are less clear. We hypothesized that plasma (fresh frozen plasma [FFP]), platelet (PLT), and cryoprecipitate administration would not be associated with increased rates of nosocomial infections. We performed a retrospective, matched, case-control study utilizing the American College of Surgeons National Trauma Data Bank data for 2019.

Despite limited data, rapid initiation of antibiotic agents is endorsed by society guidelines. We hypothesized that a post hoc analysis of a recent randomized pilot study would show no difference between two antibiotic initiation strategies.

Paradoxically, treat to target ULT is associated with increased flare activity for at least 1 year in duration on average, before gout flare burden decreases. Since XOI has anti-inflammatory effects, we tested for biomarkers of sustained, effective ULT that alters gouty inflammation.

Provider comfort level has been an understudied aspect of this practice. We hypothesized that there would be no significant differences in provider comfort level between the two treatment groups.

Optimal timing for initial debridement is emergent. Second debridement is universally recommended to occur within 24 hours of the first, but no studies have successfully evaluated this time frame.

Methods: Participants with gout and SU ≥6.8 mg/dL were randomized to allopurinol or febuxostat, titrated during weeks 0 to 24, and maintained weeks 25 to 48.
The reality of dermatology practice in the 21st century includes the potential for lawsuits and liability. While medical malpractice may be top-of-mind, there are a host of liability risks beyond malpractice-from employee claims and fiduciary liability for the practice retirement plan to premises liability and HIPAA violations-as well as potential personal liability for rental properties, car accidents (for self and children), outside businesses, personal guarantees and more. This article outlines the leading tools dermatologists can utilize to better shield their assets from potential liability-including exempt assets, co-ownership forms, and legal tools, such as limited liability companies and trusts.

In this paper, we model the effects of using new sensors called Homodyne Quadrature Interferometers (HoQIs) to control the suspension resonances. We show that if we were to use HoQIs, instead of the standard shadow sensors, we could suppress resonance peaks up to tenfold more while simultaneously reducing the noise injected by the damping system.

However, the effects of smoking on outcomes of thyroid eye disease treated with the novel therapeutic teprotumumab are currently unknown. Our study compares response to teprotumumab treatment between smokers and non-smokers with thyroid eye disease.

For the A+ project, we have developed, produced, and characterized sensors and electronics to interrogate new optical suspensions designed to isolate optics from vibrations. The central element is a displacement sensor with an integrated electromagnetic actuator known as a BOSEM (Birmingham Optical Sensor and ElectroMagnetic actuator) and its readout and drive electronics required to integrate them into LIGO's control and data system.

Despite guidelines urging rapid antibiotic use, data supporting immediate antibiotic initiation in cases of suspected infection are limited. Our hypothesis was that a protocol of specimen-initiated antibiotic initiation would have similar compliance and outcomes to an immediate initiation protocol.

This study sought to evaluate anti-P copri (anti-Pc) antibody responses in our participant cohorts and to determine when in the natural history of RA such responses develop.
Methods: We analyzed serum levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies from a 27-kd protein of P copri (anti-Pc-p27), an immunogenic P copri protein, in study participants at risk of developing RA, participants who transitioned to RA, participants with early RA (<1 year of disease), and participants with established RA, with comparisons made to their matched controls.

The Study to Optimize Peritoneal Infection Therapy (STOP-IT) Trial identified an association between prolonged antibiotic therapy and delayed identification of recurrent intra-abdominal infection (IAI). However, this association has not been observed in other studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between recurrent IAIs and the duration of antibiotic agents.

However, recent data suggests that early antibiotic initiation may not be necessary in all cases. Additionally, the benefits of early antibiotic administration for infection have not been studied in a dedicated trauma population.
