Poult enteritis and mortality syndrome (PEMS) is an acute, infectious intestinal disease of turkey poults, characterized by high mortality and 100% morbidity, that decimated the turkey industry in the mid-1990s. The etiology of PEMS is not completely understood. This report describes the testing of various filtrates of fecal material from control and PEMS-affected poults by oral inoculation into poults under experimental conditions, the subsequent isolation of a reovirus, ARV-CU98, from one of the PEMS fecal filtrates, and in vivo and in vitro studies conducted to determine the pathogenicity of ARV-CU98 in turkey poults.

The mission of the recently established Immune Tolerance Network includes the development of protocols for the induction of transplant tolerance in organ allograft recipients and the development of assays that correlate with and may be predictive of the tolerant state. The state of clinical organ transplant tolerance seems to already exist in a small minority of conventionally immunosuppressed liver and, more rarely, kidney transplant patients. Immunosuppressive drug therapy has been withdrawn from these patients for a variety of reasons, including protocolized weaning for a uniquely large group of liver patients at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dendritic cells (DC) are rare, bone marrow-derived antigen-presenting cells that play a critical role in the induction and regulation of immune reactivity. In this article, we review the identification and characterization of liver DC, their ontogenic development, in vivo mobilization and population dynamics. In addition, we discuss the functions of DC isolated from liver tissue or celiac lymph, or propagated in vitro from liver-resident haemopoietic stem/progenitor cells.

Insulin resistance syndrome (IRS)-related phenotypes, such as hyperinsulinemia, obesity-related traits, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, tend to cluster into factors. We attempted to identify loci influencing the factors of IRS-related phenotypes using phenotypic data from 261 nondiabetic subjects distributed across 27 low-income Mexican-American extended families. Principal component factor analyses were performed using eight IRS-related phenotypes: fasting glucose (FG), fasting specific insulin (FSI), BMI, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), HDL cholesterol, ln triglycerides (ln TGs), and leptin (LEP).

Ca(2+) signaling plays an important role in the function of dendritic cells (DC), the specialized antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. Here we describe functional ryanodine receptor (RyR) Ca(2+) release channels in murine, bone marrow-derived DC. RT-PCR analysis identified selective expression of the type 1 RyR, with higher levels detected in immature rather than mature DC.

Background: Considerable interest has focused recently on murine CD8alpha- and CD8alpha+ dendritic cell (DC) subsets, because of their roles in initiating and regulating immune responses. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are anti-atherogenic lipoproteins that have a major role in transporting cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver, where it is removed. Epidemiologic studies have shown that low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with an increased incidence of coronary heart disease and an increased mortality rate, indicating a protective role of high concentrations of HDL-C against atherogenesis and the development of coronary heart disease. HDL-C level is influenced by several genetic and nongenetic factors.

A methodology is developed for deriving robust operating rules for the interim control of a multipurpose reservoir. Although Ca(2+)-signaling processes are thought to underlie many dendritic cell (DC) functions, the Ca(2+) entry pathways are unknown. Therefore, we investigated Ca(2+)-signaling in mouse myeloid DC using Ca(2+) imaging and electrophysiological techniques.
