Background: Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of death in low- and middle- income countries (LMIC). Increasing antibiotic resistance in early onset (< 72 h of life) bloodstream infection (EO-BSI) pathogens in LMIC has reduced the effectiveness of the recommended empiric antibiotic regimen (ampicillin plus gentamicin).
Methods: We retrospectively analysed blood culture-confirmed EO-BSI episodes at nine neonatal units from three central and six peripheral hospitals in the Western Cape Province, South Africa between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2018.
Background: Currently, a majority of institution-specific automatic MRI-based contouring algorithms are trained, tested, and validated on one contrast weighting (i.e., T2-weighted), however their actual performance within this contrast weighting (i.

Stress influences the initiation and continued use of alcohol, the progression to AUD, and relapse. Identifying the neurocircuits activated during stress, and individual variability in these responses is critical for developing new treatment targets for AUD, particularly to mitigate stress-induced relapse.

This follow-up study evaluated whether these effects were maintained in the longer term alongside individual patterns of response.
Methods: The original study was a two-arm parallel group randomized controlled trial, which compared ACT+SMC to SMC.
Background: Patients requiring lower limb immobilization after injury have an increased venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. The extent of this risk in published studies varies. The Thrombosis Risk Prediction for Patients with Cast Immobilization (TRiP[cast]) model quantifies VTE risk using clinical parameters.

Objective: This study aimed to (1) identify demographic trends in patient preferences and experiences; (2) measure ease of use and satisfaction of telemedicine; and (3) measure changes in telemedicine use, willingness, and comfort since 2017.
Background: Hospital wastewater systems have been identified as reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with biofilms harbouring extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing micro-organisms posing significant infection risk.
Aim: To study the antimicrobial susceptibility and biofilm control of ESBL-producing bacteria from wastewater pipes from a tertiary care teaching hospital in Ireland, which had experienced endemic infection outbreaks caused by ESBL-producing bacteria.
Methods: Following isolation of ESBL producers on selective agar, antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined for a number of antibiotics assessed for their ability to form biofilms.
Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) causes up to 20% of ischaemic strokes and 30% in some populations such as those over 80 years. Previous research in our population showed that widespread adoption of Direct Oral Anticoagulant (DOAC) prophylaxis had not been associated with a reduction in AF associated stroke prevalence but there was a considerable rate of breakthrough stroke in patients receiving anticoagulation and anticoagulation rate may be affected by increasing use of DOACs.
Aims: We undertook a more detailed study using the Irish National Audit of Stroke (INAS) to determine the characteristics of anticoagulation practice in AF associated stroke, particularly breakthrough stroke, adherence to prescribing guidelines and effect on thrombolysis rate.
Introduction: Nurses working in the emergency department experience high rates of burnout. The purpose of this study was to determine job-related factors affecting the well-being of emergency nurses.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study data were collected through multiple methods.
Accurate recurrence risk stratification is crucial for optimizing treatment plans for breast cancer patients. Current prognostic tools like Oncotype DX (ODX) offer valuable genomic insights for HR+/HER2- patients but are limited by cost and accessibility, particularly in underserved populations. In this study, we present Deep-BCR-Auto, a deep learning-based computational pathology approach that predicts breast cancer recurrence risk from routine H&E-stained whole slide images (WSIs).

This study focuses on the β-lactamase gene, blaOXA-58, an important resistance determinant identified in a patient-facing hospital wastewater system. This study aimed to characterize the behaviour of the OXA-58 enzyme when expressed using a non-native plasmid and expression host.

Here, we report the management of invasive procedures in people with severe or moderately severe HB who had previously been treated with etranacogene dezaparvovec in the phase 2b and phase 3 Health Outcomes with Padua Gene; Evaluation in Hemophilia B clinical trials (NCT03489291 and NCT03569891).
Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the use of exogenous FIX, endogenous FIX activity prior to invasive procedures, and peri- and postoperative bleeds in participants who underwent invasive procedures after receiving etranacogene dezaparvovec gene therapy.
Background And Objective: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) inform health-care decisions. Unfortunately, some published RCTs contain false data, and some appear to have been entirely fabricated. Systematic reviews are performed to identify and synthesize all RCTs which have been conducted on a given topic.

Bloodstream infections are an important cause of sepsis, and epidemiological studies of these infections are crucial for predicting the most common aetiological agents and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and for developing antimicrobial guidelines. For the ten-year study period from July 2013 to June 2023, all neonatal bacteraemia cases were reviewed prospectively using an enhanced surveillance protocol.

We investigated whether stroke volume may be used to identify the subset of this population at increased risk of clinical deterioration or PE-related death. Our secondary objective was to compare echocardiographic measurements of patients who received escalated interventions vs anticoagulation monotherapy.

However, AL2 does not exhibit sequence-specific DNA binding activity but is instead directed to responsive promoters through interactions with host factors, most likely transcriptional activators and/or repressors. In this study, we describe a repressive plant-specific transcription factor, Arabidopsis thaliana TCP24 (AtTCP24), that interacts with AL2 and recognizes a class II TCP binding site in the CP promoter (GTGGTCCC).

Treatment Goals: The access to replacement therapy and prophylaxis has driven a dramatic reduction in mortality and resultant increase in life expectancy. Beyond this, the abolition of bleeds and preservation of joint health represent the expected, but rarely attained, goals of haemophilia treatment and care.
Broiler chicks are typically hatched in a hatchery, exposing them to handling and transportation before being placed on the farm where (dry) feed and water is offered. This study compared different early life systems, including: (1) typical practice (control), (2) typical practice with wet feed offered upon placement, (3) access to water at the hatchery, (4) access to feed and water at the hatchery, (5) hatching on the farm. Birds were placed in groups of approximately 500 (day 0), with six replicates per treatment.

Methods: Women underwent potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy, such as doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel, and trastuzumab, for treatment of breast cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoma. We obtained magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of body composition and cardiac function prior to treatment, and then a repeat MRI for cardiac function assessment at three months into treatment.
