Social Vulnerability of Pediatric Populations Living in Ambulance Deserts.

Of the 4.5 million people living in areas of the United States with limited access to ambulance services, approximately 20% are children aged 18 years and younger. Ambulance deserts (ADs) are defined as populated areas in the United States that are not accessible within 25 minutes of where an ambulance is stationed.

Pediatric Bipolar Disorder: Challenges in Diagnosis and Treatment.

Despite an opportunity to prevent adult psychopathology associated with bipolar disorder through early diagnosis in children, there is insufficient information and awareness among healthcare providers about the unique features and treatment of mania and its comorbid conditions in children. Converging evidence from disparate sites describe a developmentally distinct presentation of bipolar disorder in youth that is highly morbid, persistent and responds to treatment with the mood stabilizer medications used in the treatment of adult bipolar disorder, such as divalproex sodium and carbamazepine. Some are additionally approved for use in pediatric populations including, for manic or mixed states, risperidone, aripiprazole, and asenapine for those aged 10-17 years and also including lithium and olanzapine for ages 13-17 years.

Designing a behaviour change intervention using COM-B and the Behaviour Change Wheel: Co-designing the Healthy Gut Diet for preventing gestational diabetes.

Background: Evidence suggests that modulating the gut microbiota during pregnancy may help prevent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The Healthy Gut Diet study is a complex behaviour change intervention co-designed with women who have a lived experience of GDM. The aim of the study was to describe the development of the behaviour change dietary intervention, the Healthy Gut Diet.

Purpose Of Review: Although lung transplantation stands as the gold standard curative therapy option for end-stage lung disease, the scarcity of available organs poses a significant challenge in meeting the escalating demand. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in ambulatory respiratory assist systems, selective anticoagulation therapies that target the intrinsic pathway, and innovative surface coatings to enable permanent respiratory support as a viable alternative to lung transplantation.

Recent Findings: Several emerging ambulatory respiratory assist systems have shown promise in both preclinical and clinical trials.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common and costly condition of pregnancy. The Healthy Gut Diet for Preventing Gestational Diabetes study is a novel randomised controlled trial that aims to prevent GDM through a diet that modulates the gut microbiota for pregnant women with GDM risk factors. Despite increasing interest in co-designing interventions with consumers (lived experience experts), co-design methods and outcomes are often poorly reported.

Introduction: External fixation is a critical component of orthopaedic fracture management and is used for various conditions, including trauma and pediatric orthopaedics. However, the availability and high cost of external fixation devices are a concern, especially in rural and developing countries. 3D printing technology has shown promise in reducing manufacturing costs and improving accessibility to external fixation devices.

Fatal Accidental Drowning in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, 1880-1939.

Drowning is currently the second leading cause of injury-related death for children 1-4 years of age in the United States and is the leading cause of death worldwide for boys ages 5-14 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it as a public health threat and advocates for reducing drowning deaths by understanding geographical, cultural, and societal risk factors. To these three we added a fourth: historical studies.

Myocarditis in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, 1880-1939.

From 1920 to 1940 in Minnehaha County there was an apparent striking increase in the incidence of fatal myocarditis and chronic myocarditis. Based on an analysis of the interment records of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, word frequency studies in two prominent American medical journals and a general review of related medical publications, we explore this increase.

ADHD in Adults: Does Age at Diagnosis Matter?

Objective: To provide additional information about clinical features associated with adult ADHD in patients diagnosed in childhood compared to those first diagnosed in adulthood.

Method: We stratified a sample of adults with ADHD into patients diagnosed in childhood versus adulthood and compared demographic and clinical characteristics.

Results: We found similar clinical features in adults diagnosed in childhood and adults diagnosed in adulthood.

Stimulant Treatment and Potential Adverse Outcomes in Pediatric Populations With Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Objective: To explore outcomes of stimulant treatment for ADHD in pediatric populations with particular attention to bipolar disorder (BPD).

Method: We conducted a literature search of PubMed articles published prior to August 25, 2022 that focused on BPD, mania, and psychosis prior to, or as result of, stimulant treatment. We excluded studies: (1) unrelated to stimulants, (2) general stimulant research, (3) articles older than 40 years, (4) study protocols, or (5) case reports.

Growth Trajectories in Stimulant Treated Children and Adolescents: A Qualitative Review of the Literature from Comprehensive Datasets and Registries.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment with stimulant products has been shown to be safe and effective; however, there are remaining concerns about their possible adverse effects on growth trajectories. We conducted a systematic review of the extant literature derived from ecologically valid databases and registries to assess the body of knowledge about the effects of stimulants on growth trajectories in naturalistic samples. Using PubMed and PsycINFO, we searched for articles published before February 8, 2023 that focused on growth findings associated with stimulant treatment in pediatric ADHD from comprehensive datasets derived from naturalistic population studies.

Preventing Gestational Diabetes with a : Protocol for a Pilot, Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

Around 14% of pregnancies globally are affected by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), making it one of the most common disorders experienced by women in pregnancy. While dietary, physical activity and supplement interventions have been implemented to prevent GDM, with varying levels of success, altering the gut microbiota through diet is a promising strategy for prevention. Several studies have demonstrated that women with GDM likely have a different gut microbiota to pregnant women without GDM, demonstrating that the gut microbiota may play a part in glycemic control and the development of GDM.

Federal telehealth policy changes during the COVID-19 public health emergency: Associations with telemental health use among rural and urban Medicare beneficiaries.

Purpose: The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) led to increased mental health (MH) concerns among Medicare beneficiaries while inhibiting their access to MH services (MHS). To help address these problems, the federal government introduced temporary flexibilities permitting broader telehealth use in Medicare. This study compared rural versus urban patterns of change in telemental health (TMH) use among adult MHS users in fee-for-service Medicare from 2019 to 2020, when PHE-related telehealth expansions were enacted.

Food Provision at the Olympic Games in the New Millennium: A Meta-narrative Review.

Background And Objective: The objective of this meta-narrative review was to identify, organise and map the literature on food provision and nutrition support at the summer and winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (OPG)  and similar major competition events over the past 21 years. This builds on a comprehensive update of a previous historical review of the evolution of food provision at the summer Olympic Games up until 2000 and considers contemporary issues such as the global pandemic and sustainability goals.

Methods: A range of sources included primary research and review articles, edited book chapters, theses, conference papers or abstracts, International Olympic Committee reports, Organising Committees' food vision and post-Games reports, independent professional reports, and media and periodicals including magazines and trade journals.
