Since Hildegard Peplau's interpersonal relation model for psychodynamic nursing, in the 1950s, many theories about humanity have been expanded in the discipline of nursing. For this purpose Rosemarie Rizzo Parse, for example, synthesized principles and concepts from Martha Rogers with existential phenomenology, when she introduced the idea of a simultaneity paradigm as unique for the discipline of nursing in opposition to Peplau's psychodynamic model. The aim of this paper is to discuss borrowed theories in relation to the efforts to find a unique theoretical foundation for healthcare science and practice.

Membrane filtration for tertiary treatment of biologically treated effluents from the pulp and paper industry.

Discharge waters from activated sludge processes in the pulp and paper industry and from a municipal wastewater treatment plant were filtered with various nanofiltration (NF) and low pressure reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The purpose was to study flux, retention, and permeate quality after membrane filtration by using a high shear (CR-250/2) filter. The suitability of the achieved permeates for reuse at the industrial site is also discussed.

Objective: The aim was to provide radiographic data on postnatal development of the 8 mandibular teeth to serve as reference norms in clinical dentistry, forensic dentistry, anthropology, and research.

Material And Methods: Developmental stages of teeth were assessed from a total of 2795 radiographs, mostly panoramic, of 1970 Finns (966 M and 1004 F) from birth to age 25. The grading was based on Demirjian's 8 mineralization stages and the crypt stage.

The way search results are presented has impact on the user's ability to grasp the overall structure of the system. Complex hierarchies like the one used in SNOMED CT, where nodes have multiple parents (IS-A) and several other relationship types, makes visualization challenging.

An approach for generating fuzzy rules from decision trees.

Identifying high-risk breast cancer patients is vital both for clinicians and for patients. Some variables for identifying these patients such as tumor size are good candidates for fuzzification. In this study, Decision Tree Induction (DTI) has been applied to 3949 female breast cancer patients and crisp If-Then rules has been acquired from the resulting tree.

Worldwide oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents about 5.5% of all malignancies, with approximately 30,000 new cases each year in the United States. A semi-automatic method was developed for peak and valley detection in free-breathing respiratory waveforms. First the waveform is separated into breath cycles by identifying intercepts of a moving average curve with the inspiration and expiration branches of the waveform.

Background: This paper reports on a parallel collection of rubrics from the medical terminology systems ICD-10, ICF, MeSH, NCSP and KSH97-P and its use for semi-automatic creation of an English-Swedish dictionary of medical terminology. The methods presented are relevant for many other West European language pairs than English-Swedish.

Methods: The medical terminology systems were collected in electronic format in both English and Swedish and the rubrics were extracted in parallel language pairs.

The aim of this study was to analyse and describe lived experiences of support in situations characterized by critical care situations and moral stress in intensive care nursing. An exploratory interpretative study was conducted. Data consisted of interviews with 36 nurses from different types of intensive care units.

To improve coral reef management, a deeper understanding of biodiversity across scales in the context of functional groups is required. The focus of this paper is on the role of diversity within functional groups in securing important ecosystem processes that contribute to the resilience of coral-dominated reef states. Two important components of species biodiversity that confer ecosystem resilience are analyzed: redundancy and the diversity of responses within functional groups to change.

Tooth wear in maxillary anterior teeth from 14 to 23 years of age.

Using a planimetric method, the size of horizontal wear facets on maxillary anterior teeth was studied longitudinally in the permanent dentition of 35 subjects at ages 14, 18, and 23?years. The study subjects had not previously undergone any orthodontic treatment and had Class I occlusion. We studied the association between the amount of wear and reported parafunctions and maximal bite force.

Alphavbeta6 integrin in wound healing and cancer of the oral cavity.

Integrins are a family of heterodimeric cell surface receptors, which are expressed on most cells where they mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. The alphavbeta6 integrin is epithelial-specific and binds to the ECM proteins fibronectin, vitronectin and tenascin, and also to the latency associated peptide of TGF-beta. Unlike most epithelial integrins, alphavbeta6 is not expressed constitutively by healthy oral epithelia, but is up-regulated during tissue remodelling, including that accompanying wound healing and carcinogenesis.

The importance of functional testing in the genetic assessment of Muir-Torre syndrome, a clinical subphenotype of HNPCC.

A majority of families with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) are attributable to germline mutations in three DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes, MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6. However, the clinical phenotype appears to reflect a complex interplay between the predisposing mutation and putative constitutional and somatic modifiers. Certain MMR gene mutations predispose to combined occurrence of cutaneous sebaceous gland neoplasms and visceral malignancies, which is known as Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) and regarded as a phenotypic variant of HNPCC.

To further understand whether patients use ambulance care in an inappropriate manner and, if so, why, it is important to obtain an overall picture of the patients' existential situation at the time they call an ambulance. The aim of this study was to analyse and describe patients' experiences related to the decision to call an ambulance and the wait for it to arrive.
