Heart Rate Variability for the Early Detection of Cardiac Autonomic Dysfunction in Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has an important impact on morbidity and mortality because it may start early in life. Therefore, the early detection of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) in T1DM patients is important to intervene quickly and prevent further deterioration. Traditional autonomic function tests detect abnormalities in severely symptomatic patients but they are difficult to be standardized, require the patient's active participation and their sensitivity to the early disease is limited.

Effects of NaCl substitution on the sensory properties of sausages: temporal aspects.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different salt substitutes on the sensory perception of sausages. TDS was used to explore the temporal perception of the samples and DA was used as a reference method. Grill-style sausages with different levels of salt reduction combined with different salt substitutes (KCl, Na-lactate, K-lactate/Na-diacetate and milk minerals) were tested.

Anterior superior iliac spine avulsion in a young soccer player.

Avulsion fractures of the anterior superior iliac spine are rare. They usually occur in teenagers during sport activities. Cases concerning adults are very uncommon.

An unusual complication of intra-articular injections of corticosteroids: Tachon syndrome. Two case reports.

Local injections of corticosteroids can, in very rare cases, be complicated by Tachon syndrome-intense lumbar and/or dorsal and/or thoracic pain a few minutes after the injection, with rapid regression of the pain. Passing the drug into a vein through a nick made during the procedure could explain the pathophysiology of this disorder. We report two good cases illustrating the typical symptoms of this distressful syndrome.

Relation of inflammatory modic changes to intradiscal steroid injection outcome in chronic low back pain.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the severity of inflammatory endplate changes (Modic) on MRI and the clinical response to intradiscal injection of corticosteroids (IDIC) in chronic low back pain (LBP). A total of 74 patients with LBP and inflammatory Modic changes who showed no response to 3-month conservative treatment received lumbar IDIC. Two spine specialists and a radiologist assessed independently the endplate marrow changes of the injected discs.

Intradiscal corticosteroid injections in spondylotic cervical radiculopathy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment outcomes with intradiscal injection of corticosteroids (IDIC) in cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. Twenty consecutive patients were treated with intradiscal injection of 25 mg of acetate of prednisolone under fluoroscopic control. All patients had previously received a nonsurgical treatment for at least 3 months without success.

Thoracoabdominal motion during chest physiotherapy in patients affected by chronic obstructive lung disease.

In 11 patients suffering from chronic obstructive lung disease, thoracoabdominal movements were monitored with magnetometers during various breathing manoeuvres directed by the chest physiotherapist. The signals derived from the magnetometers and the mouth flow were analysed in order to pick up paradoxical movements of one or the other compartment of the chest wall. In contrast to what was observed during spontaneous breathing, especially abdominodiaphragmatic breathing induced in most of the subjects paradoxical movements.
