The oxygen tension (PO2) in the rat kidney was studied by modified Clark microelectrodes. Changes in PO2 were measured in the renal cortex and outer medulla after intravenous injections of the X-ray contrast medium (CM) diatrizoate, 370 mg iodine/mg body weight. Injection of diatrizoate caused a slight fall in PO2 in the renal cortex (from 42 +/- 4 to 38 +/- 4 mm Hg).

Injury classification and assessment is one of the most important fields of injury prevention. At present, injury assessment focuses primarily on the risk of fatalities, in spite of the fact that most people who are injured survive the trauma. The net result of a fatality-based approach is that safety and vehicle engineers must make decisions with an incomplete, and sometimes misleading, picture of the traffic safety problem.

In 40 horses, autopsy results were studied for comparison. Biopsy specimens (21 horses) and post mortem rectal tissue (9 horses) from 30 healthy horses, age 4-22 years, were used as controls.

In this study the effect of intravenous injection of contrast media and mannitol on red blood cell velocity (VRBC) and red blood cell aggregation in renal medullary vessels was studied in 58 rats. Renal medullary blood flow was investigated by a cross-correlation technique and by a visual aggregation score.

The diagnostic system for IE according to Duke's university includes echocardiographic results and classifies patients in 3 categories--'definite', 'possible', and 'rejected'--by combining pathologic, echocardiographic, clinical, and blood culture findings. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has better diagnostic sensitivity compared to transthoracic echocardiography.

Design: A randomised 17-year follow-up study.

This study was designed to determine a cost-effective use of psychologist resources in multimodal cognitive-behavioural treatments (MMCBT) for chronic neck/shoulder pain. A randomised controlled trial was conducted with 66 patients divided in two groups. The first group (A) was treated following the approach of MMCBT with the clinical psychologist only functioning as a "coach" to the other health professionals.

Healthy persons (n = 1092), both white and blue collar workers, and patients (n = 366) with different levels of physical capacity, were assessed. Most of the patients (n = 303) underwent rehabilitation programmes for neck/shoulder/low-back pain but some (n = 47) were arthritis patients waiting for hip or knee replacement surgery, or wheelchair patients with multiple sclerosis (n = 16).

Questionnaires used to assess the dependent variables were the Coping Strategy Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI). Distinctions were found between men and women.

The design was a matched cohort study with three repeated measures done in two groups of 35 referred patients (one exposed to MMCBT and controls exposed to usual care). The MMCBT package includes standardised modules of physical treatment, cognitive-behavioural treatment, education of worker patients, and education of subjects' supervisors.

The influence of intravenously injected contrast media (CM) on such obstruction was investigated.
Methods: Anesthetized rats were subjected to 45 minutes of unilateral renal ischemia.
Eight healthy men performed supine one-legged training on a bicycle ergometer 45 min per leg four times per week for 4 week. The ergometer and lower body were inside a pressure chamber, the opening of which was sealed at the level of the crotch. One leg trained with impeded leg blood flow (I-leg), induced by an increased (50 mmHg) chamber pressure, at the highest tolerable intensity.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of ischaemic and non-ischaemic training on aerobic performance. In 10 subjects, peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2) and time to fatigue (TTF) for one-legged exercise were measured before and after 4 weeks (4 times week-1) of one-legged training. Each training session started with one leg training for 45 min with 20% blood-flow reduction induced by local application of a supra-atmospheric external pressure of 50 mmHg (ischaemic leg; I-leg).

Six patients were examined twice with a 3 week's interval in a single-blind cross-over design with euglycemic insulin clamps (A and B). A reduction of endogenous serum insulin was achieved by continuous infusion of 50 microgram octreoid (a somatostatin analogue) per hour.

The quality of trauma care has been studied at five different Swedish hospitals. The results suggest that improvements in the quality of medical care for patients with severe road traffic injuries can be achieved by reorganizing the highly decentralized trauma care system in Sweden. Above all there is a need for a better structure and organization of the on-call system and of the cooperation of physicians of different specialties within the hospital.

In order to explore this association further we studied the insulin sensitivity of subjects with essential hypertension resistant to triple drug therapy (RH), with the euglycemic insulin clamp technique.
