Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a prominent contributor to morbidity and mortality, particularly in the middle-aged and elderly population. Plant-based, high-fiber diets high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts can significantly lower CVD risk factors. This systematic review aims to assess how effectively diet improves cardiovascular health in this demographic.

Radiotherapy is a commonly used modality in pelvic malignancies such as prostate, gastrointestinal, or gynecological, either as a primary treatment or an adjuvant post-surgery. Despite its positive impact on the prognosis of these patients, it was found in several studies that it contributes to insufficiency fractures in different sites of the pelvis, more commonly in the sacral ala. This is particularly true for elderly patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute hyperglycemia is commonly observed in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and is linked to increased short- and long-term mortality.
  • A review of 1056 articles led to the inclusion of 21 studies, focusing on various measures of acute hyperglycemia and their effects on patient outcomes.
  • The findings suggest that stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR), admission blood glucose (ABG), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) are correlated with mortality in ACS patients, though further research is needed to refine the definition and cutoff levels for acute hyperglycemia.

Hypertension, defined as persistently elevated blood pressure, is a prevalent chronic condition and a significant global health issue, closely linked to cardiovascular complications, with inflammation being one of the underlying mechanisms. In hypertensive patients, C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker, is often elevated and associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Alongside pharmacotherapy, exercise is recommended as a non-pharmacological approach to managing hypertension, with evidence suggesting that exercise can also reduce inflammation.

Context: Epileptic seizures and the unpredictable falls resulting from epileptic seizures predispose the people living with epilepsy (PLWE) to various physical injuries as well as postictal cognitive and behavioral changes.

Aims: The aim of the study was to determine the frequency and patterns of seizure-related physical injuries, postictal cognitive impairments, and behavioral changes.

Settings And Design: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study in a Southeast Nigeria local government area.

Telemedicine is the delivery of healthcare services using information and communication technologies to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of telemedicine, transforming how healthcare is delivered, especially in remote and underserved areas. Despite its potential, no systematic reviews have been conducted in the last five years to assess the effectiveness of telemedicine for managing diabetes in rural populations.

Intraosseous basivertebral nerve ablation has shown sustained efficacy in treating chronic axial low back pain (LBP) in patients with type 1 or 2 Modic changes. This systematic review aims to determine the efficacy of intraosseous basivertebral nerve radiofrequency ablation in treating nonradiating axial chronic LBP compared to standard therapy, sham, or without contrast. The population of interest is individuals greater than or equal to 18 years old with chronic nonradiating vertebrogenic pain.

Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health challenge described by the World Health Organization as one of the top 10 public health challenges worldwide. Drug-resistant microbes contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in the hospital, especially in the critical care unit. The primary etiology of increasing antibiotic resistance is inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotics.

Inflammation of the pericardium is referred to as pericarditis, which can cause sharp chest pain and has a high chance of recurrence even after treatment. This review will explore anakinra, which is an interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, as a potential new treatment for pericarditis. The systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines by searching PubMed and GoogleScholar from the years 2012 to 2022.

Targeted temperature management (TTM) has been the cornerstone of post-cardiac arrest care, but even after therapy, neurological outcomes remain poor. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the influence of TTM in post-cardiac arrest treatment, its effect on the neurological outcome, survival, and the adverse events associated with it. We also aimed to examine any difference between the effect of therapy at various intensities and durations on the prognosis of the patient.

Serum lipid profile which is determined by genotype-phenotype relationship plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular disease. Upstream stimulatory factor 1 (USF1), has been reported to be associated with serum lipid levels in different population, hence, this study investigated the association of variants in USF1 with serum lipid profile in adults in Lagos state, Nigeria. We genotyped rs3737787 (11235C > T) and rs550376620 (10488G > A) with PCR-RFLP in 384 participants and we used logistic regression to assess the association of these variants with serum lipid levels.

Background: Studies differ on which anthropometric measure of adiposity shows good correlation with cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we evaluated the effects of common epidemiological measures of adiposity as a correlate of elevated blood pressure in an African population.

Methodology: The study was carried out between June 2009 and December 2011 at the medical out-patient department of a tertiary healthcare center in Nigeria.

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and IL-7 are cytokines that signal via the IL-7 receptor alpha (IL-7Rα) to exert both overlapping and unique functions during early stages of mouse B-cell development. In human B lymphopoiesis, the requirement for IL-7Rα signaling is controversial and the roles of IL-7 and TSLP are less clear. Here, we evaluated human B-cell production using novel in vitro and xenograft models of human B-cell development that provide selective IL-7 and human TSLP (hTSLP) stimulation.

Acute symptomatic seizures are seizures occurring in close temporal relationship with an acute central nervous system (CNS) insult. The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of presentation and etiological risk factors of acute symptomatic seizures among adult medical admissions. It was a two-year retrospective study of the medical files of adults patients admitted with acute symptomatic seizures as the first presenting event.

This paper reports the findings from a pilot study of four patients with medically refractory epilepsy undergoing pre-surgical evaluation with ages ranging from 5 to 17 years. Video electroencephalography recordings and data from a near infrared spectroscopy cerebral/somatic oximeter were gathered and related to electrographic seizure onset and offset as determined by a paediatric epileptologist. All four patients showed haemodynamic changes associated with epileptiform activities.

Echocardiography remains the best non invasive tool for identifying patients who may have impaired filling of the left ventricle or diastolic dysfunction. The most accurate echocardiographic modality that reveals normal and abnormal diastolic function is doppler tissue imaging (DTI), and more recently, strain imaging. The complex and user intense DTI modality traces the motion of the mitral annulus during left ventricular filling revealing diastolic impairment.
