Review and Practical Guide for Getting Started With Single-Cell Proteomics.

Single-cell proteomics (SCP) has advanced significantly in recent years, with new tools specifically designed for the preparation and analysis of single cells now commercially available to researchers. The field is sufficiently mature to be broadly accessible to any lab capable of isolating single cells and performing bulk-scale proteomic analyses. In this review, we highlight recent work in the SCP field that has significantly lowered the barrier to entry, thus providing a practical guide for those who are newly entering the SCP field.

Why are organisational approvals needed for low-risk staff studies in the UK? Procedures, barriers, and burdens.

Background: Health care staff should be given the opportunity to participate in research, but recruiting clinicians via their employing organisation is not always straightforward or quick in the UK. Unlike many countries outside the UK, very low-risk survey, interview or focus group studies can be subject to some of the same governance approval procedures as interventional studies. An exemplar study carried out by the NIHR funded Palliative Care Research Partnership North West Coast is used to highlight the challenges still faced by researchers and health care organisations when setting up a low-risk staff study across multiple NHS and non-NHS sites.

Hospital-initiated palliative care interventions for adults with frailty: findings from a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Background: Adults with frailty have palliative care needs [1] but have disproportionately less access to palliative care services [2]. Frailty affects ~4000 patients admitted to hospital per day in the UK [3], making the hospital admission a unique opportunity to assess palliative care needs and deliver interventions.

Objectives: Synthesise the evidence regarding hospital palliative care (HPC) for patients with frailty.

Non-invasive technology to assess hydration status in advanced cancer to explore relationships between fluid status and symptoms: an observational study using bioelectrical impedance analysis.

Background: Oral fluid intake decreases in advanced cancer in the dying phase of illness. There is inadequate evidence to support the assessment, and management, of hydration in the dying. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a body composition assessment tool.

Understanding barriers and facilitators to palliative and end-of-life care research: a mixed method study of generalist and specialist health, social care, and research professionals.

Background: Palliative care provision should be driven by high quality research evidence. However, there are barriers to conducting research. Most research attention focuses on potential patient barriers; staff and organisational issues that affect research involvement are underexplored.

Characterizing Neighborhood Vulnerabilities in Mild Cognitive Impairment using the Environmental Justice Index.

Background: There is a need for integration and comprehensive characterization of environmental determinants of Alzheimer's disease. The Environmental Justice Index (EJI) is a new measure that consolidates multiple environmental health hazards.

Objective: This analysis aims to explore how environmental vulnerabilities vary by race/ethnicity and whether they predict cognitive outcomes in a clinical trial of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Effectiveness of pedometer-based walking programmes in improving some modifiable risk factors of stroke among community-dwelling older adults: a systematic review, theoretical synthesis and meta-analysis.

Background: Pedometer-based walking programs hold promise as a health promotion strategy for stroke prevention in community-dwelling older adults, particularly when targeted at physical activity-related modifiable risk factors. The question arises: What is the effectiveness of pedometer-based walking program interventions in improving modifiable stroke risk factors among community-dwelling older adults?

Method: Eight databases were searched up to December 2, 2023, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis protocol. Inclusion criteria focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTS) involving community-dwelling older adults and reported in English.

Responding to and managing multijurisdictional outbreaks of COVID-19 in Canadian industrial worksite/work camp settings.

Setting: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and provincial/territorial (P/T) public health identified the need for a coordinated response to complex multijurisdictional COVID-19 outbreaks. The first large multijurisdictional industrial worksite COVID-19 outbreak highlighted the risk of transmission within these congregate work settings, the risk of transmission to the broader community(ies), and the need to develop setting-specific outbreak response frameworks.

Intervention: PHAC assembled a team to provide national outbreak support for multijurisdictional COVID-19 outbreaks in May 2020.

Background: Invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS) is caused by group A bacteria. In 2022, multiple disease alerts for iGAS in the Island Health region, in the context of increased infections in the paediatric population in Europe and the United States, prompted further investigation into local trends. This surveillance study summarizes epidemiological trends of iGAS in the region covered by Island Health, a regional health authority in British Columbia, in 2022.

New UK palliative medicine consultants: clinical and non-clinical preparedness after higher specialty training.

Objectives: Higher specialty trainees are expected to achieve clinical and non-clinical skills during training in preparation for a consultant role. However, evidence from many specialties from different countries suggests that new consultants are less prepared in non-clinical skills. The transition from trainee to a consultant phase can be challenging.

How can technology be used to support communication in palliative care beyond the covid-19 pandemic: a mixed-methods national survey of palliative care healthcare professionals.

Background: Developments in digital health have the potential to create new opportunities for healthcare professionals support delivery of palliative care. Globally, many palliative care professionals used digital health innovations to support communication with staff, patients and caregivers, during COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is limited data about the views of palliative care professionals of using digital health to support communication during the pandemic.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination Coverage and Seropositivity amongst Nigerians 18 Years Old and Above.

Background: This was a cross-sectional community-based survey to study the prevalence of serum antibodies against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 1 (SARS-COV-1) and determine possible source of antibodies as to whether from vaccination or from natural infection as well as attempt to compare antibody levels in response to the different four types of vaccines administered in Nigeria.

Methods: A cross-sectional community-based study of the prevalence of serum antibodies against all four vaccine types used in Nigeria amongst a representative sample of people aged 18 years and above in the six geopolitical zones of the country using a multistage sampling technique covering 12 states of the country with two states being randomly selected from each geopolitical zone. High-throughput Roche electrochemiluminescence immunoassay system (Elecsys Anti-SARS-COV-1 Cobas) was used for qualitative and quantitative detection of antibodies to SARS-COV-1 in human plasma.

Computerized Cognitive Training in Mild Cognitive Impairment: Findings in African Americans and Caucasians.

Background: African Americans with MCI may be at increased risk for dementia compared to Caucasians. The effect of race on the efficacy of cognitive training in MCI is unclear.

Methods: We used data from a two-site, 78-week randomized trial of MCI comparing intensive, home-based, computerized training with Web-based cognitive games or Web-based crossword puzzles to examine the effect of race on outcomes.

Background: Computerized cognitive training (CCT) has emerged as a potential treatment option for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It remains unclear whether CCT's effect is driven in part by expectancy of improvement.

Blueberry Supplementation Effects on Neuronal and Pathological Biomarkers in Subjects at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Study.

Background: There is a need to develop non-invasive practical lifestyle interventions for preventing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in people at risk, such as those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Blueberry consumption has been associated with reduced risk of dementia in some epidemiologic studies and with improvements in cognition in healthy aging adults. Blood-based biomarkers have emerged at the forefront of AD therapeutics research spurred by the development of reliable ultra-sensitive "single-molecule array" assays with 100-1000-fold greater sensitivity over traditional platforms.

Background: Digital legacy refers to the online content available about someone following their death. This may include social media profiles, photos, blogs or gaming profiles. Context: In recent years, several reporting systems have been developed by national and international cytopathology organizations to standardize the evaluation of specific cytopathology specimen types.

Objective: To assess the current implementation rates, implementation methods, and barriers to implementation of commonly used nongynecologic reporting systems in cytopathology laboratories.

Design: Data were analyzed from a survey developed by the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology Committee and distributed to participants in the College of American Pathologists Nongynecologic Cytopathology Education Program mailing.

Rapid, One-Step Sample Processing for Label-Free Single-Cell Proteomics.

Sample preparation for single-cell proteomics is generally performed in a one-pot workflow with multiple dispensing and incubation steps. These hours-long processes can be labor intensive and lead to long sample-to-answer times. Here we report a sample preparation method that achieves cell lysis, protein denaturation, and digestion in 1 h using commercially available high-temperature-stabilized proteases with a single reagent dispensing step.
