Background/aim: To examine how music can impact preoperative and intraoperative anxiety via assessment of physiological markers such as pupil size, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate.

Methods: This is a randomized interventional study of individuals aged 50 years and above who were scheduled for and undergoing cataract surgery under regional anesthesia, with music (test group) randomly matched with similar individuals undergoing the same procedure but without music (control group). The surgeries were performed in the operating theater of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) pose significant challenges in clinical management, particularly in female patients, whose unique anatomical and physiological characteristics influence rupture risk. While aortic diameter (AD) has traditionally been the primary metric for predicting rupture, its limitations, especially in women, have spurred exploration into alternative measures such as the aortic size index (ASI). This review examines the anatomy and physiology of AAAs in women, gender-specific challenges in diagnosis and management, and the comparative effectiveness of ASI versus AD in predicting rupture risk.

The study investigated the hepatocurative activity of the bulk alkaloids of in a tetrachloromethane (CCl)-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats. The hepatocurative activity of the alkaloids at 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg doses was demonstrated by the assay of both enzymic and non-enzymic parameters. Sections of the liver were also subjected to histological examinations.

Article Synopsis
  • A thyroid storm is a critical medical emergency caused by extreme hyperthyroidism, requiring quick diagnosis and treatment for survival.
  • This study reviews current diagnostic criteria and scoring systems for thyroid storm, highlighting tools like the Burch-Wartofsky Point Scale, and assesses their effectiveness in identifying cases.
  • The findings indicate that while existing criteria are helpful, they have significant limitations, such as low sensitivity for milder cases and reliance on subjective clinical judgment, suggesting a need for improved, more objective diagnostic methods in the future.

Background: Clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS) is defined as somatic mutations of myeloid malignancy-associated genes in the blood or bone marrow with one or more persistent unexplained cytopenias that do not meet diagnostic criteria for a defined myeloid neoplasm. CCUS with isolated thrombocytopenia (CCUS-IT) is rare.

Methods: This is a retrospective case series of patients with prolonged isolated thrombocytopenia, a pathogenic mutation on a myeloid molecular panel, and a bone marrow biopsy with morphologic atypia below the WHO-defined diagnostic threshold for dysplasia.

Background: Pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (Pre-XDR-TB), an emerging form of drug-resistant tuberculosis, is challenging efforts at tuberculosis control, leading to treatment failure among multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients and progression to extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). We determined the rate of Pre-XDR-TB among multidrug-resistant patients in Southeast, Nigeria.

Methods: A prospective laboratory-based study was carried out at the South East Zonal Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory from January 2021 to December 2021.

Background: Bone resorption following tooth loss and proximity of the alveolar crest to vital structures such as the maxillary sinus and the inferior dental canal can be a limitation to tooth replacement with an implant. The placement of short dental implants may reduce the need for bone augmentation as bone augmentation increases the cost of providing dental implant treatment.

Aim: To assess the treatment outcome and survival rate of short implants used for single and multiple teeth replacement after one year of loading and restoration.

Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) has been traditionally used as a herbal medicine in Nigeria mainly because of its antihypertensive action. In view of the recent increase in the prevalence of renal failure, we have investigated the effect of HS consumption on renal function in Nigerians with mild to moderate hypertension. A total of 78 newly diagnosed but untreated subjects with mild to moderate hypertension attending the medical outpatients unit of Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (Enugu, Nigeria) were recruited for the study.

Objectives: The present study investigated the effects of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) on the three basic components of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system: Plasma renin, serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), and plasma aldosterone (PA) in mild to moderate essential hypertensive Nigerians and compared with that of lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor.

Materials And Methods: A double-blind controlled randomized clinical study was used. Seventy-eight newly diagnosed but untreated mild to moderate hypertensive subjects attending Medical Outpatients Clinic of Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Enugu were recruited for the study.
