Article Synopsis
  • * Self-collection of vaginal samples for HPV testing is gaining attention as a method to improve screening participation by making it easier for individuals to take part.
  • * This review begins with a case study from the Netherlands and explores the self-collection practices in Europe, discussing implementation, test performance, and identifies evidence gaps for better policy-making in screening programs.

The metabolic switch from glycolysis to fatty acid oxidation in postnatal cardiomyocytes contributes to the loss of the cardiac regenerative potential of the mammalian heart. However, the mechanisms that regulate this metabolic switch remain unclear. The protein kinase complex mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a central signaling hub that regulates cellular metabolism and protein synthesis, yet its role during mammalian heart regeneration and postnatal metabolic maturation is undefined.

There are currently several validated HPV tests. However, longitudinal data which spans appropriate age ranges, as well as evaluation of potential screening algorithms are necessary for screening programmes choice of test. The objective of our study was to evaluate the performance of HPV mRNA and HPV DNA testing, including partial genotyping, in routine cervical screening.

Leucine-rich repeat containing 10 (LRRC10) is a cardiomyocyte-specific protein, but its role in cardiac biology is little understood. Recently Lrrc10 was identified as required for endogenous cardiac regeneration in zebrafish; however, whether LRRC10 plays a role in mammalian heart regeneration remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that Lrrc10 knockout mice exhibit a loss of the neonatal mouse regenerative response, marked by reduced cardiomyocyte cytokinesis and increased cardiomyocyte binucleation.

Background: The MAVARIC study supported the use of the FocalPoint GS (FPGS) imaging system "No Further Review" (NFR) technology for cervical screening and recommended further investigation. A validation study (Nuttall et al.) was performed by Cervical Screening Wales before implementing the NFR slide reporting technology within the cervical screening program in Wales, United Kingdom.

Valproic acid (VPA) is an antiepileptic, bipolar, and migraine medication, which is associated with embryonic dysmorphology, more specifically neural tube defects (NTDs), if taken while pregnant. One mechanism by which VPA may cause NTDs is through oxidative stress that cause disruption of cell signaling. However, mechanisms of VPA-induced oxidative stress are not fully understood.

Background: An estimated 10%-24% of children attending emergency departments with a burn are maltreated.

Objective: To test whether a clinical prediction tool (Burns Risk assessment for Neglect or abuse Tool; BuRN-Tool) improved the recognition of maltreatment and increased the referral of high-risk children to safeguarding services for assessment.

Methods: A prospective study of children presenting with burns to four UK hospitals (2015-2018), each centre providing a minimum of 200 cases before and after the introduction of the BuRN-Tool.

Objective: Does TEN4 categorisation of bruises to the torso, ear or neck or any bruise in <4-month-old children differentiate between abuse, accidents or inherited bleeding disorders (IBDs)?

Design: Prospective comparative longitudinal study.

Setting: Community.

Patients: Children <6 years old.

Objectives: The Burns and Scalds Assessment Template (BaSAT) is an evidence-based proforma coproduced by researchers and ED staff with the aim of (1) standardising the assessment of children attending ED with a burn, (2) improving documentation and (3) screening for child maltreatment. This study aimed to test whether the BaSAT improved documentation of clinical, contributory and causal factors of children's burns.

Methods: A retrospective before-and-after study compared the extent to which information was recorded for 37 data fields after the BaSAT was introduced in one paediatric ED.

Background: Patients with ongoing symptoms after non-operative treatment of lateral epicondylosis are usually treated with surgical release. Platelet-rich plasma injection is an alternative treatment option. This study aims to determine whether there is a difference in outcome from platelet-rich plasma injection or surgical release for refractory tennis elbow.

Background: To the authors' knowledge, published studies reporting on the performance of the FocalPoint GS (FPGS) imaging system have yielded conflicting results to date. However, the results of the MAVARIC study indicated that the FPGS "No Further Review" (NFR) aspect of the technology demonstrated potential and warranted further investigation. The current validation study was performed prior to implementing the NFR slide reporting technology within the routine cervical screening program in Wales, United Kingdom.

Introduction: Appropriate first aid can reduce the morbidity of burns, however, there are considerable variations between international first aid recommendations. We aim to identify, and compare first aid practices in children who present to Emergency Departments (ED) with a burn.

Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 500 children (0-16 completed years) presenting with a burn to a paediatric ED in the UK (Cardiff) and the USA (Denver, Colorado), during 2015-2017.

Background: It is standard practice to image concerning bruises in children. We aim to compare the clarity and measurements of bruises using cross polarized, infra-red (IR) and ultra-violet (UV) images to conventional images.

Methods: Children aged <11 years with incidental bruising were recruited.

Introduction: The BuRN-Tool (Burns Risk assessment for Neglect or abuse Tool) is a clinical prediction tool (CPT) aiding the identification of child maltreatment in children with burn injuries. The tool has been derived from systematic reviews and epidemiological studies, validated and is under-going an implementation evaluation. Clinician opinion on the use of this CPT is a key part of its evaluation.

An initial literature search identified a deficit in the non-medical prescribing evidence base in relation to V150 community practitioner nurse prescribing. Nineteen V150 prescribers from eight professional roles, and prescribing for a variety of conditions, along with three NMP leads, participated in this evaluation. The evaluation used a mixed methodology of questionnaires and telephone interviews; 19 V150 prescribers participated, with all of them completing the online questionnaire.

Background: Bruising is a common abusive injury in children, and it is standard practice to image and measure them, yet there is no current standard for measuring bruise size consistently. We aim to identify the optimal method of measuring photographic images of bruises, including computerised measurement techniques.

Methods: 24 children aged <11 years (mean age of 6.

The dog chew studied here is a starch-based, twin-screw cooker extruded dog care and treat (C&T) product with oral health benefits. The manufacturing process and nutrient profile of such products are markedly different from those of main meal pet foods. Predicted metabolisable energy (PME) in pet food is calculated using equations derived from main meal feeding studies so it is unclear whether these equations can be applied to C&T products.

Unlabelled: Aim The aim of this metasynthesis was to develop an understanding of the existing theoretical perspectives around nurse prescribing and to identify any gaps in knowledge, which would support further research into the lived experience of the nurse prescriber in the primary care setting.

Background: Nurse prescribing has been the focus of many research studies since its introduction, with many benefits to the patient, the prescriber and service identified; however, there remains variation in the utilisation of the prescribing qualification, particularly in primary care settings. Although a range of quantitative and qualitative studies have been undertaken, which aimed to explore the influences on prescribing, few have used a research methodology that supports the in-depth exploration of the nurse prescriber's experience.

Aims: Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) allows an extremely accurate measurement of early micromotion of components following arthroplasty.

Patients And Methods: In this study, RSA was used to measure the migration of 11 partially cemented fluted pegged glenoid components in patients with osteoarthritis who underwent total shoulder arthroplasty using an improved surgical technique (seven men, four women, mean age 68). Patients were evaluated clinically using the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and Constant-Murley scores and by CT scans two years post-operatively.
