An optical genosensor based on Schiff base complex (Zn salphen) DNA label and acrylic microspheres (AMs) as polymer support of the capturing DNA probe (cpDNA) was developed for dengue virus serotype 2 (DEN-2) detection via reflectance spectrophotometric method. In the present study, the residual pesticide levels were determined in eggplants (Solanum melongena) (n = 16), purchased from four different markets in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The carbamate and organophosphorus pesticide residual levels were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the efficiency of gamma radiation on pesticide removal in three different types of vegetables was also studied. Many (50%) of the samples contained pesticides, and three samples had residual levels above the maximum residue levels determined by the World Health Organisation.

A highly selective and sensitive amperometric biosensor for the detection of phenol was developed based on a platform where Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are electrodeposited onto a disposable screen printed carbon electrode and tyrosinase is then covalently immobilized on the AuNP's using alkanethiol and cross-linker molecules. The electrocatalytic responses of the tyrosinase modified biosensor for the detection of phenol were measured using both cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. Temperature, buffer pH and the amount of tyrosinase immobilized on the electrode surface were also optimized for phenol sensing.

Several types of organophosphorous and carbamate pesticides have been used extensively by the farmers in Bangladesh during the last few decades. Twenty seven water samples collected from both paddy and vegetable fields in the Savar and Dhamrai Upazilas in Bangladesh were analyzed to determine the occurrence and distribution of organo-phosphorus (chlorpyrifos, malathion and diazinon) and carbamate (carbaryl and carbofuran) pesticide residues. The first X-ray crystal structures of nickel(II) and copper(II) salphen metal complexes bound to a quadruplex DNA are presented. Two structures have been determined and show that these salphen-metal complexes bind to human telomeric quadruplexes by end-stacking, with the metal in each case almost in line with the potassium ion channel. Quadruplex and duplex DNA binding is presented for these two and other related salphen complexes, all with side-chains terminating in pyrrolidino end-groups and differing patterns of substitution on the salphen core.
