The Atlantic bonito (Sarda, family Scombridae) is a pelagic species and one of the most exploited small tuna species. Despite its economic importance, biological information is scarce with no associated management directives. In this study, using a population genomic approach resulted in a lack of panmixia of two genetic pools with different effective population sizes (east central-tropical Atlantic and northeast Atlantic-Mediterranean) and an intermixing zone in Atlantic Morocco.

The American bullfrog () is considered to be one of the most harmful invasive species. In the Iberian Peninsula, this species had been cited occasionally until the year 2018, when appeared in the Ebre Delta, and, for the first time, it started breeding in a territory of the Peninsula. Maternal polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) status during pregnancy may influence birth outcomes and offspring adiposity during childhood. Cord blood PUFA levels associate positively with maternal PUFA and negatively with the newborn's abdominal adiposity. However, longitudinal, prospective studies consistently evaluating maternal and cord blood and PUFA levels in childhood and their association with the child's body composition are so far lacking.

We analyzed variation at the GPI-2 locus and eleven microsatellite loci of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki populations introduced to the Ebro River (Spain), sampling above and below a dam (Flix Reservoir) where severe chronic pollution has been well documented. Allele frequency changes at the GPI-2 locus in the sites nearest to the polluted sediments agree with previous results from studies in mercury-exposed populations of this highly invasive fish. Genetic distinction of the mosquitofish collected close to the polluted sediments was detected at the GPI locus but also at the presumptive neutral microsatellite loci.

This study presents the first results on Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) individual spawning duration and its short-term temporal behavior. The study was based on direct measurements resulting from mtDNA analysis of the offspring of spawners held in transport cages during the 2013 spawning monitoring survey in Balearic waters. The number of females consisted of approximately 259 individuals with an average weight of 186 kg.

The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha, Pallas, 1771) is one of the most invasive species of freshwater bivalves, due to a combination of biological and anthropogenic factors. Once this species has been introduced to a new area, individuals form dense aggregations that are very difficult to remove, leading to many adverse socioeconomic and ecological consequences. Genetic analyses contribute to studies of biological invasions by mapping the origin and dispersal patterns of invasive species occupying new territories. Using microsatellite loci, we assessed the genetic diversity and spatial population structure of mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) that had invaded Spanish watersheds, along with the American locations close to the suspected potential source populations. Mosquitofish populations from the Spanish streams that were studied had similar levels of genetic diversity to the American samples; therefore, these populations did not appear to have undergone substantial losses of genetic diversity during the invasion process.

Background: The global spread of the 2009 novel pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus led to the accelerated production and distribution of monovalent 2009 Influenza A (H1N1) vaccines (pH1N1). This pandemic provided the opportunity to evaluate the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which has been an influenza vaccine safety concern since the swine flu pandemic of 1976, using a common protocol among high and middle-income countries. The primary objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of global collaboration in the assessment of vaccine safety, including countries both with and without an established infrastructure for vaccine active safety surveillance.

The reaction of dinuclear copper(II) cryptates with calcium cyanamide, CaNCN, and sodium dicyanamide, Na[N(CN)(2)] results in dinuclear compounds of formulae [Cu(2)(HNCN)(R3Bm)](ClO(4))(3) (1), [Cu(2)(dca)(R3Bm)](ClO(4))(3)4H(2)O (2), and [Cu(2)(NCNCONH(2))(R3Bm)](CF(3)SO(3))(3) (3), in which R3Bm=N[(CH(2))(2)NHCH(2)(C(6)H(4)-m)CH(2)NH(CH(2))(2)](3)N and dca=dicyanamido ligand (NCNCN(-)). The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals for both 1 and 3 a dinuclear entity in which the copper atoms are bridged by means of the -NCN- unit. The molar magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-3 in the 2-300 K range indicate ferromagnetic coupling.

Dinuclear compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/c, octanuclear compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 and the 1-D alternating system crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2/n.

Several MnII compounds with phenylcyanamido ligands have been synthesized and characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray structural determination. The reported compounds show a wide variety of nuclearity from mononuclear and dinuclear systems to 1D chains and 2D networks in which X-phenylcyanamide (X-pcyd) anions act as the bridging ligand. The influence of aging on the mechanisms of liver injury and regeneration was studied in a model of hepatotoxicity induced in 2-, 6-, 12-, 18- and 30-month-old rats by a sublethal dose of thioacetamide (500 mg/kg body weight), a soft nucleophilic and hepatotoxic compound metabolized by the hepatic microsomal FAD monooxygenase system. Samples-blood and hepatocytes-were obtained at 0, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h following thioacetamide intoxication. Parameters of liver injury in serum (NADPH-isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) activity) indicate that the severity of injury was significantly higher in the adult groups (6 and 12 months old) when compared either with the youngest (2 months old) or oldest (18 and 30 months old) groups.
