Impact of team experience on robot-assisted surgery for rectal cancer: A comparative study.

Introduction: The robotic surgical team in the operating room plays an important role in determining the outcome of a robotic approach. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of 2 hospitals with different levels of expertise in robot-assisted rectal cancer surgery.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 195 patients who underwent robot-assisted rectal resection at 2 referral centers for the treatment of rectal cancer between March 2018 and December 2021.

Comparison between epidural technique and mid-axillary ultrasound-guided TAP block for postoperative analgesia of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: a quasi-randomized clinical trial.

Background: Our goal was to evaluate whether TAP block offers the same analgesic pain control compared to epidural technique in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy surgery through the morphine consumption in the first 48 hours.

Methods: In this study, 45 patients were recruited and assigned to either TAP or epidural. The main study outcome was morphine consumption during the first 48 hours after surgery.

Designing Spinel LiTiO Electrode as Anode Material for Poly(ethylene)oxide-Based Solid-State Batteries.

The development of a promising Li metal solid-state battery (SSB) is currently hindered by the instability of Li metal during electrodeposition; which is the main cause of dendrite growth and cell failure at elevated currents. The replacement of Li metal anode by spinel LiTiO (LTO) in SSBs would avoid such problems, endowing the battery with its excellent features such as long cycling performance, high safety and easy fabrication. In the present work, we provide an evaluation of the electrochemical properties of poly(ethylene)oxide (PEO)-based solid-state batteries using LTO as the active material.

Prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) among Children Adopted from Eastern European Countries: Russia and Ukraine.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a leading cause of neurodevelopmental disorders. Children adopted internationally from countries where alcohol consumption during pregnancy is very high are at greater risk for FASD. Lack of expertise in diagnosing FASD and mixed neurodevelopmental and behavioral signs due to abandonment complicate a timely diagnosis.

A randomized clinical trial comparing the initial vascular approach to the inferior mesenteric vein versus the inferior mesenteric artery in laparoscopic surgery of rectal cancer and sigmoid colon cancer.

Background: The inferior mesenteric artery approach with a selective lateral splenic flexure mobilization is the most widely used initial step in laparoscopic rectal and left colon surgery. Surgery started through the inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) with systematic medial mobilization (MM) has some theoretical advantages that have never been analyzed in a clinical trial. The aim of this study was to compare the two techniques with regards to surgical technique variables (conversion, surgical time, bleeding, morbidity, and mortality) and pathological outcomes.

Is Seasonal Households' Consumption Good for the Nexus Carbon/Water Footprint? The Spanish Fruits and Vegetables Case.

Proximity and in-season consumption criteria have been suggested as solutions for fruits and vegetables consumers to drive the economy to a more sustainable development. Using a new concept, seasonal avoided footprint by imports, we disentangle the role of period and country of origin. Although, as a general rule, consumers could reduce the footprint by choosing domestic produce, this is not always the case.

Modification of Bacterial Cellulose Biofilms with Xylan Polyelectrolytes.

The effect of the addition of two [4-butyltrimethylammonium]-xylan chloride polyelectrolytes (BTMAXs) on bacterial cellulose (BC) was evaluated. The first strategy was to add the polyelectrolytes to the culture medium together with a cell suspension of the bacterium. After one week of cultivation, the films were collected and purified.

Are patients with bipolar disorder and comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder more neurocognitively impaired?

Objective: Research on neurocognitive impairment in adult patients with comorbid bipolar disorder (BD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is very scarce. This study assessed the neurocognitive profile of a comorbid group (BD+ADHD) compared with that of pure BD (pBD) group, pure ADHD (pADHD) group and healthy controls (HCs).

Methods: This was a three-site study comprising 229 subjects: 70 patients with pBD, 23 with BD+ADHD, 50 with pADHD, and 86 HCs.

Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) Applied to Study the Distribution of Ink Components in Printed Newspapers.

A new method was developed to study how the oil and cyan pigments of cold-set ink are distributed in newspaper thickness. The methodology involved laboratory printing followed by delamination of the printed paper. The unprinted side, printed side, and resulting layers were analyzed using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR).

Characterization of purified bacterial cellulose focused on its use on paper restoration.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) synthesized by Gluconacetobacter sucrofermentans CECT 7291 seems to be a good option for the restoration of degraded paper. In this work BC layers are cultivated and purified by two different methods: an alkaline treatment when the culture media contains ethanol and a thermal treatment if the media is free from ethanol. The main goal of these tests was the characterization of BC layers measured in terms of tear and burst indexes, optical properties, SEM, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, degree of polymerization, static and dynamic contact angles, and mercury intrusion porosimetry.

An association study of sequence variants in the forkhead box P2 (FOXP2) gene and adulthood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in two European samples.

Objectives: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common psychiatric disorder manifesting as symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. Learning disabilities co-occur with ADHD in 20-30% of cases and this high co-occurrence raises the possibility of a common etiological background. Forkhead box P2 (FOXP2) encodes a transcription factor involved in speech and language impairment and in the control of the corticobasal ganglia circuits known to be relevant in ADHD, suggesting a possible role of FOXP2 in ADHD.

Transthoracic migration of a Kirschner wire from the humerus to the abdomen.

Migration of Kirschner wires after fracture fixation is a rare complication. Several cases of intrathoracic migration after humeral or clavicle fixation with this technique have been reported though. We describe an even rarer case where a wire migrated from the proximal humerus to the abdomen perforating the left thoracic cavity and hemidiaphragm.

DIRAS2 is associated with adult ADHD, related traits, and co-morbid disorders.

Several linkage analyses implicated the chromosome 9q22 region in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disease with remarkable persistence into adulthood. This locus contains the brain-expressed GTP-binding RAS-like 2 gene (DIRAS2) thought to regulate neurogenesis. As DIRAS2 is a positional and functional ADHD candidate gene, we conducted an association study in 600 patients suffering from adult ADHD (aADHD) and 420 controls.

Effect of switching drug formulations from immediate-release to extended-release OROS methylphenidate : a chart review of Spanish adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Background: The potential advantages of osmotic-release oral system (OROS) methylphenidate (Concerta) over immediate-release (IR) methylphenidate (Rubifen) in adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with respect to medication adherence, effectiveness and tolerability, are yet to be determined.

Objective: To compare the adherence, effectiveness and tolerability of OROS methylphenidate versus IR methylphenidate in adults with ADHD. It was hypothesized (after data collection) that adherence and effectiveness would be higher with OROS methylphenidate than with the IR formulation.

Subtotal thyroidectomy: a reliable method to achieve euthyroidism in Graves' disease. Prognostic factors.

Background: Subtotal thyroidectomy is a widely accepted surgical procedure for Graves' disease. The purpose of this work is to evaluate functional long-term results and determine predictive prognostic factors of postoperative thyroid function.

Study Design: This is a retrospective study conducted on 202 patients with Graves' disease undergoing subtotal thyroidectomy during the period 1979-2002.

Dietary deprivation of fermented foods causes a fall in innate immune response. Lactic acid bacteria can counteract the immunological effect of this deprivation.

Extrinsic factors such as maternal microbiota, bacterial load of the environment, diet and medication modulate the intestinal microbiota. Maturation and function of the immune system is influenced by established gut microbiota. In this work we describe the immunological effects of the dietary deprivation of fermented foods of healthy volunteers.

[Factors associated with morbidity and mortality after gastric bypass. Alternatives for risk reduction: sleeve gastrectomy].

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze factors related to morbidity and mortality after gastric bypass and to evaluate lower-risk alternatives in selected patients.

Patients And Methods: A prospective cohort of 761 patients who underwent gastric bypass was included. Prognostic factors were studied using a logistic regression model with SPSS 11.

Molecular cloning characterization and expression of porcine immunoreceptor SIRPalpha.

SWC3 is a porcine CD that has been the reference marker of myeloid lineage. It is expressed in every myelomonocytic cell from early bone marrow precursors. We have identified the molecule recognized by anti-SWC3 antibodies as a member of the signal-regulatory proteins (SIRPs)alpha family.

The consumption of two new probiotic strains, Lactobacillus gasseri CECT 5714 and Lactobacillus coryniformis CECT 5711, boosts the immune system of healthy humans.

Orally ingested probiotic bacteria are able to modulate the immune system. However, differences exist in the immunomodulatory effects of different probiotic strains. Moreover, different regulatory effects, which depend on the health status of the consumer, have been identified.

Oral administration of two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus gasseri CECT5714 and Lactobacillus coryniformis CECT5711, enhances the intestinal function of healthy adults.

Modifications in gastrointestinal parameters, intestinal colonization and tolerance are some of the main goals claimed for probiotics. However, although healthy people are the common target for these new functional food products, the number of clinical trials analysing the effects of probiotics in gastrointestinal parameters of healthy subjects is very scarce. A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trial involving 30 healthy adults was performed to investigate the effect of a fermented product containing two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus gasseri CECT5714 and Lactobacillus coryniformis CECT5711, on several blood and fecal parameters, most of them related to the host intestinal function.

Survey of bovine enterovirus in biological and environmental samples by a highly sensitive real-time reverse transcription-PCR.

Animal enteroviruses shed in the feces of infected animals are likely environmental contaminants and thus can be used as indicators of animal fecal pollution. Previous work has demonstrated that bovine enterovirus (BEV) present in bovine feces contaminates waters adjacent to cattle herds and that BEV-like sequences are also present in shellfish and in deer feces from the same geographical area. However, little information is available about the prevalence, molecular epidemiology, and genomic sequence variation of BEV field isolates.

In vitro differentiation of porcine blood CD163- and CD163+ monocytes into functional dendritic cells.

Swine monocytes constitute a heterogeneous cell population containing subsets with distinct functional capacities or representing different maturational stages. Based on the expression of CD163, we have recently identified two monocyte subpopulations. In this study, we investigate the ability of both CD163- and CD163+ monocytes to differentiate into dendritic cells (DCs) in the presence of GM-CSF and IL-4.
