Trigeminal neuralgia: assessment and management by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United Kingdom.

We aimed to find out how oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United Kingdom currently assess and manage patients with suspected trigeminal neuralgia, and compared this with best practice. We undertook a postal survey of 297 consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the UK (of whom 178 (60%) replied) asking questions about examinations and routine investigations of new patients with symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia, and their subsequent management. Clinical examination including cranial nerve function was made by almost all respondents (92%).

A Chryseobacterium meningosepticum outbreak observed in 3 clusters involving both neonatal and non-neonatal pediatric patients.

Three clusters of Chryseobacterium meningosepticum infections in a tertiary health center in July 2006 and January 2007 involving 8 newborns and 5 older children were investigated. The index patient was from the neonatal intensive care unit, and the older patients were from other pediatric wards. Cultures were obtained from the environment and from health care workers' hands as part of an outbreak investigation.

Evaluation of the optic nerve head with the heidelberg retina tomograph in diabetes mellitus.

Background: To evaluate the optic nerve head by means of the Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).

Methods: The study group consisted of 47 patients with DM [group 1; 29 patients without diabetic retinopathy (DR) and 18 patients with non-proliferative DR] and 50 normal subjects (group 2). All patients and controls underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, and the optic nerve head topography of both eyes was evaluated by using HRT-I.

Investigation of ABCA1 C69T and G-191C polymorphisms in coronary artery disease.

Background: Defects of lipoprotein metabolism are common risk factors for coronary artery disease. The ATP binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1) plays an important role in carrying cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver. The role of ABCA1 C69T and G-191C gene polymorphisms on plasma lipid levels of patients with coronary artery disease was investigated.

We present surface properties of buffer films (AIN and GaN) and Al0.3Gao.zN/Al2O3-High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) structures with/without AIN interlayer grown on High Temperature (HT)-AIN buffer/Al2O3 substrate and Al2O3 substrate.

[Thromboelastography and its use in cardiac surgery].

Thromboelastography is an alternative method to conventional coagulation tests for the general evaluation of hemostatic system. Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass is accomplished by complex alterations of hemostasis, including acquired dysfunction of platelets, consumption coagulopathy and increased fibrinolysis. Despite major advances in blood conservation methods and perioperative care of the patients, transfusion rates in cardiac surgery remain high.

Effect of Ala16Val genetic polymorphism of MnSOD on antioxidant capacity and inflammatory response in open heart surgery.

Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammation in cardiac surgical patients involves complex humoral and cellular interactions. We investigated the effect of genetic polymorphism of manganase superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) a natural antioxidant, on cytokine release and manganesuperoxide dismutase in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

Patients And Methods: Forty-two patients undergoing elective CABG with CPB were included in the study.

The relationship among vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin A, progesterone and oestradiol 17-beta concentrations in plasma and cyst fluid of Holstein cows with ovarian cyst.

The aims of this study were to determine the concentrations of the progesterone, oestradiol-17-beta, vitamin A, C and beta-carotene in plasma and cyst fluid and to relate these values with cystic diameter and membrane thickness of Holstein cattle with ovarian luteal cyst. 1650 Holstein cows were examined for the presence of the ovarian cyst and luteal and follicular cystic ovaries were obtained following slaughtering in personal slaughterhouse in Konya-Turkey. 15 Luteal and 15 follicular cystic ovaries were distinguished by rectal palpation and by post mortem ultrasonographic examination.

Urease activity and urea gene sequencing of coccoid forms of H. pylori induced by different factors.

Helicobacter pylori exists in two morphologic forms: spiral shaped and coccoid. The nonculturable coccoid forms were believed to be the morphologic manifestations of cell death for a long time. However, recent studies indicate the viability of such forms.

The effect of NQO1 polymorphism on the inflammatory response in cardiopulmonary bypass.

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been associated with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Endothelial dysfunction related to non-laminar flow during CPB is known to play a key role in this complex pathology. Antioxidant response element (ARE) dependent NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) promoter is a regulatory element involved in the anti-inflammatory mechanism in vasculature exposed to non-laminar flow.

No relation between angiotensin-converting enzyme gene polymorphism and pseudoexfoliation.

Aims: To determine the association between the angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism and pseudoexfoliation (PEX) in Turkish patients.

Methods: This prospective study consisted of 89 patients with PEX, and 120 controls. The I/D polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene was measured with the use of the polymerase chain reaction method.

Unusual case of post-traumatic lingual paraesthesia.

We report an unusual case of lingual paraesthesia caused by a fracture of the base of the skull involving the foramen ovale. As far as we know, lingual sensory neuropathy associated purely with a fracture of the base of the skull has not been reported before.

Carotid atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk factors in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are important factors in mortality and morbidity of dialysis patients. Cardiovascular risk assessment is important in order to arrange the treatment strategies. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and various CVD risk factors in dialysis patients.

[Mupirocin resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from wound infections].

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged as an important pathogen in community-acquired and nosocomial infections. The unique bactericidal action of mupirocin makes it one of the few antibiotics still effective against MRSA. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mupirocin resistance in MRSA strains isolated from wound infections of in- and out-patients of two distinct hospitals located in Ankara and Istanbul.

Genetic polymorphisms contribute to acute kidney injury after coronary artery bypass grafting.

Background: Acute kidney injury is one of the most serious complications after cardiac surgery. Genetic polymorphisms are reported to be associated with postoperative renal impairment. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between selected gene polymorphisms and acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery.

Presence of lipoprotein lipase S447X stop codon affects the magnitude of interleukin 8 release after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Objective: Current data suggest that individual genetic predisposition may influence the magnitude of cytokine response and the degree of organ dysfunction after cardiopulmonary bypass. Lipoprotein lipase S447X polymorphism has been shown to be protective against atherosclerosis. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of lipoprotein lipase S447X polymorphism on cytokine release and early outcome after cardiopulmonary bypass.

Characterization and assessment of "Kullar Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant" wastewaters.

We investigated conventional characterization of wastewaters of the "Kullar Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant." In the study of conventional characterization; 23 composite samples, which were taken during 10 months, were used and analysed as COD, BOD5, TKN, NH3-N, SS, VSS, TP, RP, TS, Alkalinity, oil and grease, detergent, chloride parameters. For determine of the plant efficiency, 8 output grab samples were taken.

Effect of a low molecular weight heparin molecule, dalteparin, on cellular apoptosis and inflammatory process in an incisional wound-healing model.

Purpose: In this study we aimed to test the effect of a low molecular weight heparin molecule, namely dalteparin, on the inflammation and cellular apoptosis in an incisional wound-healing model in rats.

Methods: Eighteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 6 for each group). Two full-thickness skin incisions were made over cervical and lumbar regions of all rats.

Male rats exhibit higher oxidative protein damage than females of the same chronological age.

The basis of the difference in life expectancy between males and females is still unknown. Previous studies have provided compelling evidence for the presence of oxidized proteins, and lipids in advanced human atherosclerotic lesions. The gender factor responsible for such protein oxidation is unknown and controversial.

Effect of the administration of flunixin meglumine on pregnancy rates in Holstein heifers.

Fifty-two 15-month-old Holstein heifers were synchronised with single or double injections of prostaglandin F(2alpha), followed by an injection of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (gnrh) 48 hours later, and inseminated 12 to 14 hours after the injection of gnrh (day 0). Half of them were then injected twice intramuscularly with 1.1 mg/kg flunixin meglumine 12 hours apart, on the evening of day 15 and the morning of day 16, and the other 26 were not treated.

Sensorineural hearing loss in pseudoexfoliation.

Background: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX), which affects anterior segment structures, is thought to be a systemic disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible relation between PEX and sensorineural hearing loss.

Methods: The study group included 51 patients with PEX and 22 controls without PEX.

Changes in electrical and physiological properties of human blood during storage.

In this study, the relationship between physiological parameters and electrical impedance changes of human blood and their further clinical implications are investigated. The study is performed on 255 erythrocyte suspension samples derived from 51 male donors. The samples are stored at 4°C and measurements are done on the 0, 10, 21, 35and 42days of storage.

Plasmid profiles and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis strains from outbreaks and sporadic cases in Turkey.

The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristics of Salmonella serotype Enteritidis strains isolated from outbreaks and sporadic cases in Turkey by plasmid profiles and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns. A total of 64 S. Enteritidis clinical strains were selected from the culture collection of the Enterobacteria Laboratory of Ankara University Medical School Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology for molecular analysis using the plasmid profiles and RAPD method.

Coronary artery bypass grafting in idiopathic myelofibrosis: a case report.

The concomitant presence of myeloproliferative disorders and the need for coronary artery bypass surgery is a surgical dilemma. Thrombosis and hemorrhage can cause difficult problems and might require different approaches during and after surgery. We report a patient who had idiopathic myelofibrosis and underwent a successful coronary artery bypass surgery.

Malignant mucosal melanoma of the right maxillary sinus: a case report.

The case of a 74-year-old female is reported. The patient was under long-term review for melanosis affecting the mucosa of the upper right alveolar ridge. The patient developed a primary mucosal melanoma at the site 5 years later and underwent a right maxillectomy and a modified right neck dissection to level 5 nodes.
