This study demonstrates rapid photocatalytic oxidation of a benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) mixture over TiO/volcanic glass. The assessment of the photocatalytic oxidation of BTEX was conducted under conditions simulating those found in indoor environments affected by aromatic hydrocarbon release. We show, under UV-A intensities of 15 mW/cm and an air flow rate of 55 m/h, that low ppmv levels of BTEX concentrations can be reduced to below detectable levels.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Syr Darya River is crucial for providing freshwater to the Aral Sea, but Soviet agricultural programs have led to increased water diversion, harming water quality and its use for irrigation and fisheries.
  • - The study examined heavy metals and metalloids in unfiltered water samples from the Syr Darya, finding significant differences between what was dissolved and what could be extracted with dilute nitric acid.
  • - Results showed that certain metals exceeded safe levels for fisheries, highlighting the need to reconsider how trace metal concentrations are measured to evaluate water quality for agricultural and ecological purposes.
