Introduction: Periodontitis is characterized by the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a significant part in the degradation of collagen structure. The gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of MMPs increase with the progression of periodontal inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between subgingival bacteria and the levels of MMP-3, an enzyme related to tissue destruction, in patients with different types of periodontitis and healthy individuals.
  • Researchers found that patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (AgP) had higher MMP-3 levels compared to those with chronic periodontitis (CP) and healthy subjects, with specific bacteria known to contribute to tissue destruction being more prevalent.
  • The findings suggest that MMP-3 could serve as a biomarker for diagnosing AgP, and that monitoring its levels, along with bacterial counts, may help inform treatment strategies for periodontitis.

Aim: To evaluate whether the cytokine responses in liver and serum differ in chronic hepatitis C patients with normal and high alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels.

Methods: Thirty-three (16 with normal ALT level as group 1 and 17 with elevated ALT level as group 2) patients infected with genotype 1b hepatitis C virus (HCV) were examined. Liver infiltrating lymphomononuclear cells (LILMCs) were isolated from liver biopsy by collagenase type 1 and stimulated with phytohemagglutinin and interleukin 2 (IL-2).

The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) and keratin (AKA) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as well as in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), who may present with rheumatoid factor (RF)-positive arthritis. The study group consisted of 46 patients with RA (26 patients were negative for RF), 32 with pSS, 22 with WG, and 40 healthy controls. The RF, anti-CCP, and AKA were detected in serum using the latex agglutination test, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and indirect immunofluorescence, respectively.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the demographic and clinical features and prognosis of patients with different systemic necrotizing vasculitides (SNV) in Turkey.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-three patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), 15 with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN), and two with Churg-Strauss syndrome were included in the study. The clinical and laboratory features of patients with WG and PAN were compared, and survival analysis was performed for the WG patients.
