  • The US faces a significant gun violence issue, highlighted by 698 mass shootings in 2021, resulting in 705 deaths and thousands of injuries.
  • Researchers analyzed clinical data from 31 hospitals regarding 403 survivors of mass shootings from 2012-2019, focusing on both physical and psychological injuries.

In March of 2020, Texas declared a statewide public health emergency in response to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus, forcing the shutdown of many critical operations across the state. The pandemic has had a massive impact on the refugee population worldwide, increasing displacement and limiting opportunities for resettlement, work, and aid. In an effort to evaluate and address the holistic needs of the San Antonio's vulnerable refugee community during the pandemic, the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic (SARHC) created a COVID-19 response team that screened and triaged the population, collected data, and provided telemedicine and other urgent teleservices.

Background: Military aeromedical transport evacuates critically injured patients are for definitive care, including patients with or at risk for developing traumatic compartment syndrome of the extremities (tCSoE). Compartment pressure changes of the extremities have not been determined to be associated with factors inherent to aeromedical transport in animal models, but the influence of aeromedical evacuation (AE) transport on the timing of tCSoE development has not been studied in humans. Using a registry-based methodology, this study sought to characterize the temporal features of lower extremity compartment syndrome relative to the timing of transcontinental AE.

Introduction: Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), the largest military hospital and the only level 1 trauma center in the DoD, cares for active duty, retired uniformed services personnel, and beneficiaries. In addition, BAMC works in collaboration with the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC) and University Hospital (UH), San Antonio's other level 1 trauma center, to provide trauma care to residents of the city and 22 counties in southwest Texas from San Antonio to Mexico (26,000 square mile area). Civilian-military partnerships are shown to benefit the training of military medical personnel; however, to date, there are no published reports specific to military personnel experiences within emergency care.

Unlabelled: Introduction Ventilation with a bag valve mask (BVM) is a challenging but critical skill for airway management in the prehospital setting. Hypothesis Tidal volumes received during single rescuer ventilation with a modified BVM with supplemental external handle will be higher than those delivered using a standard BVM among health care volunteers in a manikin model.

Methods: This study was a randomized crossover trial of adult health care providers performing ventilation on a manikin.

Critically injured patients are at risk for hypothermia. This study determined the efficacy of three hypothermia prevention strategies: the ChillBuster warming blanket, ChillBuster with a reflective blanket, and two wool blankets. A quasi-experimental design was used to compare changes in core temperature.
