Introduction And Importance: Iatrogenic nerve injury is a possible complication of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), which remains standard-of-care for some breast cancer patients. Recently, several studies have demonstrated that nerves auto-fluoresce in near-ultraviolet light (NUVL). We describe three women with BC in whom a recently-developed NUVL camera was used to facilitate visualization of and prevent iatrogenic injury to the intercostobrachial, long thoracic, and thoracodorsal nerves during ALND.

Background: Women who have a mastectomy for breast cancer treatment or risk reduction may be offered different options for breast reconstruction, including use of implants or the woman's own tissue (autologous tissue flaps). The choice of technique depends on factors such as the woman's preferences, breast characteristics, preoperative imaging, comorbidities, smoking habits, prior chest or breast irradiation, and planned adjuvant therapies.

Objectives: To assess the effects of implants versus autologous tissue flaps for postmastectomy breast reconstruction on women's quality of life, satisfaction, and short- and long-term surgical complications.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two popular weight loss surgeries, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), focusing on how these procedures affect gut microbiota over a two-year period.
  • Researchers collected fecal and blood samples from 54 severely obese patients before and after surgery, finding that both procedures led to significant changes in the gut microbiome and overall nutritional parameters.
  • The study concludes that while both surgeries resulted in substantial shifts in gut bacteria composition, the specific technique used did not significantly affect these changes, suggesting that gut microbiota could be a potential indicator of post-surgery outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue tumor typically occurring in adults aged 20-50, presenting as a slow-growing skin nodule that can become prominent if not treated.
  • Two case studies are presented: a 22-year-old woman with a nodule in her left breast initially misdiagnosed, and a 54-year-old woman with a growing lump in her right breast, both confirmed to be DFSP after excision.
  • DFSP is a low-grade sarcoma that needs early diagnosis and surgical removal to prevent complications; while surgery is the main treatment, other options like Mohs surgery or Imatinib exist for difficult cases.

New tracers for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), as indocyanine green (ICG), superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and micro bubbles, have been recently introduced in clinical practice showing promising but variable results. We reviewed the available evidence comparing these new techniques with the standard tracers to evaluate their safety. To identify all available studies, a systematic search was performed in all electronic databases.

In science, bezoar is a mass of hair or undigested vegetable matter, found in a human or animal's intestines, similar to a hairball. Usually, it is found trapped in every part of the gastrointestinal system and must be distinguished by pseudobezoar which is an indigestive object voluntarily introduced into the digestive tract. The term Bezoar is from Arabic bāzahr, "bezoar" or ultimately from Middle Persian p'tzhl pādzahr, "antidote, bezoar"ægagropile o egagropile It should be a universal antidote that works against any poison, and could neutralize any poison.

Laparoscopy has already been validated for treatment of early gastric cancer. Despite that, no data have been published about the possibility of a minimally invasive approach to surgical complications after primary laparoscopic surgery. In this multicentre study, we describe our experience in the management of complications following laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Breast cancer-associated fibroblasts (BCAFs), the most abundant non-cancer stromal cells of the breast tumor microenvironment (TME), dramatically sustain breast cancer (BC) progression by interacting with BC cells. BCAFs, as well as myofibroblasts, display an up regulation of activation and inflammation markers represented by α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). BCAF aggregates have been identified in the peripheral blood of metastatic BC patients.

Obesity represents a major health concern; bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment reducing and maintaining weight loss. The role of a routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) prior bariatric surgery is still debated. Moreover, in this scenario of COVID-19 pandemic, EGD is even more questionable due to the procedural risk of viral transmission.
