Synthesis of a novel glibenclamide-pioglitazone hybrid compound and its effects on glucose homeostasis in normal and insulin-resistant rats.

A new library of hybrid compounds that combine the functional parts of glibenclamide and pioglitazone was designed and developed. Compounds were screened for their antihyperglycemic effects on the glucose tolerance curve. This approach provided a single molecule that optimizes the pharmacological activities of two drugs used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) and that have distinct biological activities, potentially minimizing the adverse effects of the original drugs.

Factors associated with unprotected sex in people who consume sexually explicit media.

Objective: To analyze the factors associated with sex without the use of condoms in consumers of sexually explicit media (SEM).

Methods: Cross-sectional study, with a sample of 172 participants selected and collected through social media. To assess the predictors of unprotected sexual practices, the Poisson regression model was used.

Air pollution is the leading cause of the global burden of disease from the environment, entailing substantial economic consequences. International shipping is a significant source of NO, SO, CO and PM, which can cause known negative health impacts. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the health impacts and the associated external costs of ship-related air pollution in the Iberian Peninsula for 2015.

Dodecylpyridinium chloride removal by persulfate activation using UVA radiation or temperature: experimental design and kinetic modeling.

The degradation of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) by SO and HO radicals, generated by UVA and thermal-activated persulfate (PS) was investigated. Temperatures of 30-50°C were used for the heat activation of PS. Evaluation of Exposure to Toluene and Xylene in Gasoline Station Workers.

The main volatile organic compounds found at gasoline stations are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX). They cause several harmful effects on human health. Regulatory Norm 7 (1978) provides that, in Brazil, biological monitoring of toluene and xylene is carried out by measuring the urinary metabolites hippuric acid (HA) and methylhippuric acid (MHA), respectively.

General Concepts in Theranostics.

Theranostics describes the pairing of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic agents with common specific targets. Nuclear medicine is the greatest theranostics protagonist, relying on radioactive tracers for imaging biologic phenomena and delivering ionizing radiation to the tissues that take up those tracers. The concept has gained importance with the growth of personalized medicine, allowing customized management for diseases, refining patient selection, better predicting responses, reducing toxicity, and estimating prognosis.

Decreased Sulfate Content and Zeta Potential Distinguish Glycosaminoglycans of the Extracellular Matrix of Osteoarthritis Cartilage.

We aimed to determine the characteristics that distinguish glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from osteoarthritis (OA) and normal cartilage and from men and women. Cartilage samples from 30 patients subjected to total joint arthroplasty secondary to OA or fracture (control) were evaluated, and the GAG content (μg/mg dry cartilage) after proteolysis was determined by densitometry, using agarose-gel electrophoresis. Relative percentages of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) in GAGs were determined by elemental microanalysis, as well as the zeta potential.

Women are particularly vulnerable to sexual HIV-1 transmission. Such differences have been associated, at least partially, to poor drug penetration of the lower female genital tract and the need for strict adherence to continuous daily oral intake of TDF/FTC.

Origin of the Giant Enhanced Raman Scattering by Sulfur Chains Encapsulated inside Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

In this work, we explain the origin and the mechanism responsible for the strong enhancement of the Raman signal of sulfur chains encapsulated by single-wall carbon nanotubes by running resonance Raman measurements in a wide range of excitation energies for two nanotube samples with different diameter distributions. The Raman signal associated with the vibrational modes of the sulfur chain is observed when it is confined by small-diameter metallic nanotubes. Moreover, a strong enhancement of the Raman signal is observed for excitation energies corresponding to the formation of excited nanotube-chain-hybrid electronic states.

Humanitarian Operations (HO) have attracted the interest of professionals and academics, mainly due to their potential to reduce human suffering in disaster situations, leading to consolidation as a research field. With the evolution of the HO research field, synthesis of the knowledge and previous discoveries has become an important task for its advancement. In this study, a literature review based on bibliometric mapping techniques was carried out in order to identify the HO intellectual structure.
