The concentrations of nasal nitric oxide (nNO) vary in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) supposedly depending upon whether the paranasal ostia are open or obstructed. Our aim was to assess whether nNO levels and their response to topical xylometazoline (a local vasoconstrictor used to alleviate nasal congestion) in patients with CRS differ between those with open or obstructed ostia and if the results were altered by the use of nasal corticosteroids. Methodology: Sixty-six patients with CRS (43% with nasal polyps) or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis and 23 healthy controls were included.

Objective: Dolichoectatic vertebrobasilar aneurysms (DVBAs) are expansions of arterial tissue leading to aneurysmal formations without an obvious neck. Their natural history is poorly understood; usually patients are admitted with thromboembolic complications and/or neurological symptoms from the mass effect. There have not been international collective data, and correct timing for highly risky treatments has been under discussion.

Background: The use of antithrombotic medication following acute flow diversion for a ruptured intracranial aneurysm (IA) is challenging with no current guidelines. We investigated the incidence of treatment-related complications and patient outcomes after flow diversion for a ruptured IA before and after the implementation of a standardized antithrombotic medication protocol.

Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective study including consecutive patients treated for acutely ruptured IAs with flow diversion during 2015-2023.

Objective: In contrast to high-grade dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF), low-grade dAVF is mainly associated with tinnitus and carries a low risk of morbidity and mortality. It remains unclear whether the benefits of active interventions outweigh the associated risk of complications in low-grade dAVF.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective single-center study that included all consecutive patients diagnosed with an intracranial low-grade dAVF (Cognard type I and IIa) during 2012-2022 with DSA.

Article Synopsis
  • ACDF is a common surgery for cervical radiculopathy, but it may lead to adjacent segment disease (ASD) due to stress on nearby discs, while TDR is a newer alternative aimed at preserving motion.
  • The study aimed to compare the long-term outcomes of TDR and ACDF by evaluating reoperation rates, symptoms, and quality of life among patients.
  • The research involved analyzing medical records and sending questionnaires to patients who underwent TDR or ACDF at Helsinki University Hospital over a 14-year follow-up period.

Background: Previously thought to be congenital, AVMs have shown evidence of de-novo formation and continued growth, thus shifting thoughts on their pathophysiology. Pediatric AVM patients have been reported to be more prone to develop AVM recurrence after a seemingly complete cure. Therefore, we assessed the risk of AVM treated in childhood to recur in adulthood after a long-term follow-up in our own cohort.

The mechanisms of health effects of moisture damage (MD) are unclear, but inflammatory responses have been suspected. The usefulness of laboratory and allergy tests among patients in secondary healthcare with symptoms associated with workplace MD were examined. Full blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and skin prick testing were assessed and analyzed in relation to multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and perceived stress in 99 patients and 48 controls.

Objective: Detecting bacteria as a causative pathogen of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) is a challenging task. Electronic nose technology is a novel method for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that has also been studied in association with the detection of several diseases. The aim of this pilot study was to analyze maxillary sinus secretion with differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) and to determine whether the secretion demonstrates a different VOC profile when bacteria are present.

Objective: Vertebrobasilar artery nonsaccular aneurysms (VBANSAs) are associated with a 13% annual mortality. Revascularization and flow diversion are life-saving options in select cases; technical failures and rapid hemodynamic changes may contribute to unwanted outcomes. We describe a technique and report clinical outcomes of patients treated with an experimental slow-closing clip (SCC).

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD) is a chronic medical condition that includes asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis, and hypersensitivity to aspirin and other NSAIDs. Eosinophilic inflammation in the upper and lower airways is treated with local corticosteroids, repeated antibiotics, oral corticosteroid courses, endoscopic sinus surgery, and in some cases aspirin treatment after desensitization (ATAD). Nevertheless, the disease may be uncontrolled and it has a great impact on quality of life.

The prevalence of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) is around 2-3% in the general population. We hypothesized that the prevalence of small UIAs is higher among 50 to 60-year-old female smokers, since the incidence of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is exceptionally high in 60 to 70-year-old female smokers. Ethics approval for this pilot study of 50 women was obtained from the hospital ethics committee.
