Background: We aimed to evaluate outcomes of robotic versus conventional laparoscopic colorectal resections in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD].
Methods: Comparative studies of robotic versus laparoscopic colorectal resections in patients with IBD were included. The primary outcome was total post-operative complication rate.

An estimated 2.5-3 million individuals (0.4%) in Europe are affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Gender representation on journal editorial boards is one of the key metrics of gender representation within academic surgery. The aim of this study was to quantify gender representation within the editorial leadership of journals affiliated with UK surgical specialties.

Methods: Colorectal surgeons worldwide participated in a two-part online survey.

Background: Multiple investigations are available to aid the diagnosis and monitoring of disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Fecal calprotectin (FC) is an established surrogate for intestinal inflammatory activity. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) including thiopurine metabolites, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels and antidrug antibody measurements are a step toward personalized medicine in IBD, but face access barriers.

The Royal Wolverhampton hospital followed both protocols. Here, we investigate the evidence behind this decision within the context of surgical admissions during the COVID-19 peak in our hospital.

Many do not respond to available treatments and despite recommendations by a global consensus, there are currently no specific patient-derived quality of life tools to measure response to treatment. We present a new validated patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for this complicated disease phenotype.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Perianal fistulas are a challenging manifestation of Crohn's disease. Best medical and surgical therapy results in only about a third of patients remaining in remission at one year on maintenance treatment and sustained healing is often elusive. There is little published data on patient perspective of living with the condition or coping strategies in the face of non-curative/non-definitive treatment.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPatients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the incidence has declined over the past 30 years, which is probably attributed to raise awareness, successful CRC surveillance programs and improved control of mucosal inflammation through chemoprevention. The risk factors for IBD-related CRC include more severe disease (as reflected by the extent of disease and the duration of poorly controlled disease), family history of CRC, pseudo polyps, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and male sex.

Methods: An 11-question survey was distributed among gastroenterologists attending the 14th European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) congress.
Background And Aims: The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is rising worldwide and no cure is available. Many patients require surgery and they often present with nutritional deficiencies. Although randomised controlled trials of dietary therapy are lacking, expert IBD centres have long-established interdisciplinary care, including tailored nutritional therapy, to optimise clinical outcomes and resource utilisation.

This study investigates whether segmentation software could provide precise and reproducible objective measurements of fistula volume.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with perianal Crohn's fistula at our institution between 2007 and 2013.
Objective: Lack of standardised outcomes hampers effective analysis and comparison of data when comparing treatments in fistulising perianal Crohn's disease (pCD). Development of a standardised set of outcomes would resolve these issues. This study provides the definitive core outcome set (COS) for fistulising pCD.

Despite the considerable disease burden, current treatment options remain unsatisfactory. The Fifth Scientific Workshop [SWS5] of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation [ECCO] focused on the pathophysiology and clinical impact of fistulas in the disease course of patients with Crohn's disease [CD].

Most patients receive anti-TNF medication, but no long-term results of this expensive medication have been described, nor has its efficiency been compared to surgical strategies. With this study, we hope to provide treatment consensus for daily clinical practice with reduction in costs.

Choledochal cysts are rare cystic dilatations of the extrahepatic biliary tree, the intrahepatic bile ducts, or both and carry a substantial risk of malignant transformation. Type I choledochal cysts, which involve the entire common hepatic and common bile ducts, represent 80% to 90% of these lesions. We report laparoscopic excision of symptomatic type I choledochal cyst in a 37-year-old woman, and review the literature.

Aim: To explore the attitudes of medical students at the University of Manchester, UK to the causes of stress and to examine their views on help-seeking.
Study Design: A qualitative study using semistructured interviews, with analysis of the data using the technique of constant comparison.
