Objectives: Edema after shoulder arthroscopic surgery poses concerns due to its potential complications such as compartment syndrome, nerve damage, and respiratory issues. This study aimed to investigate the acute accumulation of subcutaneous fluid after shoulder arthroscopy.

Methods: A prospective cohort study, providing Level III evidence was conducted on 50 patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery under interscalene block anaesthesia from September to December 2023.

Background/objectives: The gene variant results in a thermolabile MTHFR enzyme associated with elevated plasma homocysteine in TT individuals. Health risks associated with the TT genotype may be modified by dietary and supplemental folate intake. Supplementation with methyltetrahydrofolate (methylTHF) may be preferable to folic acid because it is the MTHFR product, and does not require reduction by DHFR to enter one-carbon folate metabolism.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has primarily been studied for its effects on cortical excitability, with limited exploration of its neuroprotective and hemodynamic benefits. This review examines the role of tDCS in stroke, with a focus on neuroprotection in acute settings and cerebral blood flow (CBF) modulation in both acute and chronic phases.

Activity of CDK4/6 inhibitors and parameters affecting survival in elderly patients in age-subgroups: Turkish Oncology Group (TOG) retrospective study.

Highly selective inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6is) have emerged as a standart of care for first- and second-line therapies in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. It has been reported that combination therapy is more effective than ET alone and is safe in elderly patients as well as young patients. Nevertheless, elderly and very old patients with HR+/HER2-MBC treated with CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) combinations are relatively underrepresented in randomized controlled trials.

Body composition and nutritional status in nursing home residents during the COVID-19 lockdown: a 15-month follow-up.

Since the beginning of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, nursing home residents had been under strict quarantine, which greatly affected their lifestyle and health. In this follow-up study, we analysed whether lifestyle changes during the lockdown had an impact on their body composition and nutritional status. For this purpose we determined body composition, nutritional status, and osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) prevalence in 24 volunteer nursing home residents just before the February 2020 COVID-19 lockdown and about 15 months into the lockdown.

Direct Oral Anticoagulants vs. Heparin for Cancer-Related Stroke: Augmented Meta-Analysis.

Background: Ischemic stroke is common among patients with systemic malignancy, associated with increased risk of neurological deterioration and mortality compared to the general population. Optimal approach to secondary stroke prevention in cancer patients is unclear. In this meta-analysis, we evaluated available data on the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and heparin products for stroke prevention in this population.

Stable and Promiscuous Galactose Oxidases Engineered by Directed Evolution, Atomistic Design, and Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction.

Galactose oxidase (GOase) is a versatile biocatalyst with a wide range of potential applications, ranging from synthetic chemistry to bioelectrochemical devices. Previous GOase engineering by directed evolution generated the M-RQW mutant, with unprecedented new-to-nature oxidation activity at the C6-OH group of glucose, and a mutational backbone that helped to unlock its promiscuity toward other molecules, including secondary alcohols. In the current study, we have used the M-RQW mutant as a starting point to engineer a set of GOases that are very thermostable and that are easily produced at high titers in yeast, enzymes with latent activities applicable to sustainable chemistry.

Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the effect of age and gender on the alveolar bone destruction pattern with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the posterior region of the maxilla.

Materials And Methods: The study group included CBCT image records of 361 consecutive patients (180 males and 181 females) aged 20 years and older. Alveolar crest morphology in the maxillary right and left first and second molar teeth on retrospective images was classified as a horizontal or vertical defect (one-walled, two-walled, three-walled, and combined bone defect) on four surfaces (mesial, distal, buccal, and palatinal).

Osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) syndrome, the coexistence of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and adiposity (either excess or redistributed/infiltrated), has been studied globally in different populations and regions (mostly in East Asia, less in Europe and North America), resulting in varied prevalence. We aimed to determine the prevalence of OSA in a large population of apparently healthy Caucasian adults (18-90 years) and to compare it with the prevalence reported in other studies and other ethnicities. This study included 9719 participants (6412 women and 3307 men), stratified into four age-group categories, and recruited from the general medical practices in Italy.
