In this paper the authors focus attention on the role of gastrin as a carcinogenic factor. The aim was to bring together the numerous controversial studies on this subject, adding the authors' own personal clinical experience. Gastrin (G) is responsible for the development of carcinoids, as has been experimentally shown in Mastomys rats, and more recently in man.

Rationale: The effects of antidepressant (AD) drugs on sleep in depressed patients and their relationship to AD response have been investigated previously. However, newer AD agents, which appear to have different effects on sleep, have not been evaluated systematically for their usefulness in predicting treatment response.

Objectives: To examine the effect of bupropion sustained release (SR) (Wellbutrin SR) on sleep macroarchitecture, and to assess whether the observed electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep changes in response to a single dose of bupropion are associated with treatment response to the AD.

Rationale: Ethnicity can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of psychopharmacologic drugs.

Objectives: Reboxetine disposition differences among Asians, blacks, and Caucasians were examined.

Methods: Healthy subjects (12 Asians, 12 blacks, 12 Caucasians) received a single oral dose of one 4-mg reboxetine tablet in an open label, parallel study design.

Extant data, mostly from studies in vitro, suggest that coumarin and nicotine are both metabolized by CYP2A6, a cytochrome P450 isozyme. In order to investigate this issue further, the activity of this enzyme in vivo was measured in 37 non-smokers and 37 smokers using coumarin (2.0 mg, PO) as the metabolic probe.

The present review confirms the existence of the so-called "ovarian-derived prorenin-angiotensin cascade". It also describes the physiopathology of the system and, consequently, its role in the genesis of phenomena concerning reproductive function such as ovulation, steroid synthesis and folliculogenesis. Moreover, the "ovarian-derived prorenin-angiotensin cascade" appears to play an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of diseases such as ovarian tumours, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and ectopic pregnancy.

The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of adinazolam and N-demethyladinazolam (NDMAD), its major active metabolite, were compared in 39 healthy male volunteers (13 Asian, 12 Caucasian and 14 African-American). In a four-way, double-blind crossover design, subjects were administered (1) 30 mg oral adinazolam mesylate SR tablets, (2) 10 mg parenteral (i.v.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a particular form of degenerative dementia probably due to deposit in the brain cortex of a non soluble protein called beta-A4 amyloid in senile plaque form. beta A4 is an aberrant mutant proteolytic product of Amyloid Protein Precursor (APP) codified on chromosome 21. Trisomy 21 is responsible for Down's Syndrome (DS).

In a cross-ethnic study of neuroleptic response, the level of family involvement with the treatment of 26 Asian and 26 Caucasian patients was evaluated. Asian family members were intimately involved, Caucasians much less so. These results quantitatively demonstrated the relatively greater importance of working with family members when treating Asian patients.

Over 3 months, 13 Caucasian and 16 Asian schizophrenic patients were sequentially treated with weight-adjusted fixed doses and clinically determined, variable doses of haloperidol. During the fixed-dose phase, Asians had a slightly higher mean serum haloperidol concentration and a significantly higher rating for extrapyramidal symptoms. During the variable-dose phase, the Asian patients' mean required dose was significantly lower, resulting in lower serum haloperidol concentrations at the first emergence of extrapyramidal symptoms and for optimal clinical response.
