Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of HIV seroconversion during pregnancy and the factors influencing it among women attending ante-natal clinics in Uyo, Nigeria.
  • Out of 502 HIV-negative women tested, 3% (15 women) were found to be HIV positive upon re-testing, highlighting the risk of undetected HIV infections during pregnancy.
  • Key factors associated with seroconversion included age (25-29 years), partners with sexually transmitted infections, being in a polygamous relationship, and the consumption of alcohol; thus indicating the need for repeat HIV testing.
  • The findings suggest that re-screening pregnant women for HIV is an essential strategy for preventing mother-to-child transmission.
