Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines how urban-polluted groundwater impacts the early life stages of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in the Toyohira River, focusing on survival rates and body size affected by chemical toxins, low dissolved oxygen, and high temperatures.
  • - Experimental tests revealed that exposure to groundwater led to over a 10% decrease in salmon size and weight, along with higher mortality rates during different developmental stages, particularly in the laboratory setting.
  • - Although immediate water quality concerns are low due to no observed detrimental effects in the wild, spawning areas with high groundwater pollution still need careful management to prevent risks, especially as pollution could lead to mortality issues related to size differences among fry.

Several systematic reviews have reported that flow mediated dilatation (FMD) was significantly increased in subjects after ingestion of chocolate that contains flavan-3-ols; however, the mechanisms responsible for this effect are not clear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of a single oral dose of flavan-3-ols on the systemic circulation and microcirculation in the cremaster muscle using intravital video microscopy in vivo. The cremaster muscle in rats was spread over a plastic chamber and a gastric tube was placed into the stomach.
