Pilot Study on Classification of Sensory Symptoms in PTSD.

PTSD treatment that focused on a sensory symptoms is increasing. The study aimed to explore symptoms and abnormalities in the five senses exhibited by persons with PTSD and to examine whether there are any differences depending on type of traumatic experience. Questionnaire was followed by interviews to clinical psychologists involved in the treatment of PTSD.

Simultaneous quantification of dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib, and ponatinib using high-performance liquid chromatography-Photodiode array detection.

Background: Dasatinib, nilotinib, and bosutinib, second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and ponatinib, a third-generation TKI, are approved pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Although liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assays for simultaneous quantification of the four TKIs in human serum have been reported in the literature, a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay that simultaneously quantifies these compounds has not yet been developed. This study aims to establish and validate an efficient HPLC analytical method using a photodiode array (PDA) detector for the simultaneous quantification of the four TKIs.

Impact of Preoperative Functional Capacity on Postoperative Outcomes in Congenital Heart Surgery: An Observational and Prospective Study.

Background: Despite advances in surgical technique and postoperative care in congenital heart disease, cardiovascular morbidity is still high.

Objective: To evaluate the association between preoperative cardiovascular fitness of children and adolescents, measured by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and the occurrence of cardiogenic, septic shock and death in the postoperative period.

Methods: Prospective, observational clinic study including 81 patients aged from 8 to 18 years.

Background: After cardiac surgery, physiological abnormalities or adverse events might occur in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) during physical therapy care. Identifying these events may help improve patient safety and care.

Objectives: To estimate the incidence and the degree of severity of physiological abnormalities or adverse events during physical therapy interventions provided in the ICU after cardiac surgery.

Infra-Abdominal Muscles Activation Brings Benefits to the Pulmonary Function of Patients with Sternal Instability after Cardiac Surgery.

Objective: To compare physical therapy strategies involving abdominal muscle stabilization, with and without upper limb movement, in patients with sternal instability after heart surgery and during in-hospital care.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal, randomized, and comparative clinical study included 20 patients, which were divided into two groups: ARM, the arm group (n=10), and LEG, the leg group (n=10). The study involved the evaluation of scores of visual analog scales for sternal instability, pain, discomfort, functional impairment, lung function, and maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) before and after the interventions.

Physiological and Lifestyle Traits of Metabolic Dysfunction in the Absence of Obesity.

Purpose Of Review: Individuals with metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW) have an adverse cardiometabolic risk factor profile in the absence of excess body weight, and increased risk for diabetes and heart disease. We critically review some physiological traits and lifestyle characteristics of the MUNW phenotype.

Recent Findings: The prevalence of MUNW varies considerably around the world and among ethnicities, partly because of different definitions; on average, this phenotype affects about ~ 30% of normal weight persons globally.

Renoprotective effects of the novel prostaglandin EP4 receptor-selective antagonist ASP7657 in 5/6 nephrectomized chronic kidney disease rats.

Prostaglandins (PGs) are important lipid mediators of numerous physiologic and pathophysiologic processes in the kidney. Effect of Intensive vs Moderate Alveolar Recruitment Strategies Added to Lung-Protective Ventilation on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Perioperative lung-protective ventilation has been recommended to reduce pulmonary complications after cardiac surgery. The protective role of a small tidal volume (VT) has been established, whereas the added protection afforded by alveolar recruiting strategies remains controversial.

Randomized and comparative study between two intra-hospital exercise programs for heart transplant patients.

Objective: To compare the effects of two physical therapy exercise in-hospital programs in pulmonary function and functional capacity of patients in the postoperative period of heart transplantation.

Methods: Twenty-two heart transplanted patients were randomized to the control group (CG, n=11) and training group (TG, n=11). The control group conducted the exercise program adopted as routine in the institution and the training group has had a protocol consisting of 10 stages, with incremental exercises: breathing exercises, resistance training, stretching and walking.

[Safety and effectiveness of low-dose lenalidomide therapy for multiple myeloma complicated with bortezomib-associated interstitial pneumonia].

A 78-year-old woman was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM: IgG κ type, stage IIIA, ISS III) at a nearby hospital in August 2010. Alveolar recruitment maneuver in refractory hypoxemia and lobar atelectasis after cardiac surgery: a case report.

Objective: This case report describes an unusual presentation of right upper lobe atelectasis associated with refractory hypoxemia to conventional alveolar recruitment maneuvers in a patient soon after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.

Results: The alveolar recruitment with PEEP = 40 cm H2O improved the patient's atelectasis and hypoxemia.

[Systemic amyloidosis associated with IgD-λ multiple myeloma].

We describe here a case of systemic amyloidosis associated with IgD multiple myeloma. A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital in April 2009, because of macroglossia and swelling in both wrists and fingers. He had difficulty moving his limbs and was aware of peripheral neuropathy.

Some intracellular proteins involved in the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) system have microtubule interacting and transport (MIT) domains and bind to ESCRT-III protein family members named charged multivesicular body proteins (CHMPs) at their C-terminal regions containing MIT-interacting motifs (MIMs). While two types of MIMs (MIM1 and MIM2) have been reported, CHMP1B has MIM1 and IST1 has both MIM1 and MIM2. Previously, we demonstrated that CHMP1B and IST1 directly interacted with a tandem repeat of MIT domains of calpain-7 (CL7MIT) and that autolytic activity of calpain-7 was enhanced by IST1 in vitro but not by overexpression of IST1 in HEK293T cells.

Clinical effects of high oral dose of donepezil for patients with Alzheimer's disease in Japan.

Background: Donepezil 10 mg/day gained approval in Japan in August 2007 for the treatment of cognitive dysfunction in advanced Alzheimer's disease.

Methods: We evaluated the efficacy and adverse effects of donepezil when the dose was increased to 10 mg/day in 61 Japanese patients with Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale and mini-mental state examination at the day before starting, and at 4, 8 and 24 weeks after starting donepezil 10 mg/day.

Benefits of non-invasive ventilation after extubation in the postoperative period of heart surgery.

Objective: to show the benefits of the use of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in the process of weaning from mechanical ventilation in the immediate postoperative period of heart surgery.

Methods: A prospective, randomized and controlled study was performed involving 100 consecutive patients submitted to coronary artery bypass grafting or valve surgery. The subjects were admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under mechanical ventilation and randomized in a study group (n=50), which used NPPV with bilevel pressure for 30 minutes after extubation, and a control group (n=50) which only used a nasal O2 catheter.

Cyclic thrombocytopenia is a rare disorder with periodic changes of the platelet count. We experienced a patient with cyclic thrombocytopenia and Sjögren syndrome (SS), and studied the mechanism of the cyclic changes of the platelet count. The patient, a 75-year-old woman, was referred to our hospital because of dry mouth, dry eyes, and severe thrombocytopenia.

Application of noninvasive ventilation in acute respiratory failure after cardiovascular surgery.

Objective: To examine ventilatory response, oxygenation-related, and hemodynamics of patients with hypoxemic acute respiratory failure (ARF) submitted to noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) during the postoperative phase of cardiovascular surgery in order to identify predictive variables of success, and to compare the different types of NIV.

Performance of two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography for the assessment of infarct size and left ventricular function in rats.

Although echocardiography has been used in rats, few studies have determined its efficacy for estimating myocardial infarct size.
