TiO used for photocatalytic water purification is most active in the form of nanoparticles (NP), but their use is fraught with difficulties in separation from solution or/and a tendency to agglomerate. The novel materials designed in this work circumvent these problems by immobilizing TiO NPs on the surface of exfoliated clay minerals. A series of TiO/clay mineral composites were obtained using five different clay components: the Na-, CTA-, or H-form of montmorillonite (Mt) and Na- or CTA-form of laponite (Lap).

Article Synopsis
  • Immunocompromised patients have shown weak responses to initial SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations, prompting recommendations for extra booster doses; however, real-world data on these recommendations is limited.
  • A two-year follow-up of the COVAXID clinical trial involved 364 participants, focusing on their immune responses and the effects of their vaccination schedule and underlying health conditions.
  • The study found that while some patients who initially had poor responses improved after additional doses, their immune response remained affected by their immunosuppressive status, emphasizing the need for ongoing vaccination efforts in these populations.

The paper focuses on the problem of controlling a double-unit actuating system with a series of actuators. Based on the conventional mid-ranging control system (MCS) with two PI controllers, a robust step-by-step design and tuning framework is proposed based on the D-partition method to improve the cooperation between the controllers. Furthermore, a universal modification is proposed that can improve the MCS performance by adding a feedforward compensator.

The gut and oral microbiome is altered in people living with HIV (PLWH). While antiretroviral treatment (ART) is pivotal in restoring immune function in PLWH, several studies have identified an association between specific antiretrovirals, particularly integrase inhibitors (INSTI), and weight gain. In our study, we explored the differences in the oral and gut microbiota of PLWH under different ART regimens, and its correlation to Body Mass Index (BMI).

The hypothesis of the study was that (1) 3D printed drug delivery systems (DDS) could be characterized in situ during drug release using NMR/MRI techniques in terms of mass transport phenomena description (interfacial phenomena), particularly for systems dealing with two mobile phases (e.g., water and low molecular weight liquid polymer); (2) consequently, it could be possible to deduce how these interfacial mass transport phenomena influence functional properties of 3D printed DDS.

Titania nanoparticles (NPs) find wide application in photocatalysis, photovoltaics, gas sensing, lithium batteries, etc. One of the most important synthetic challenges is maintaining control over the polymorph composition of the prepared nanomaterial. In the present work, TiO NPs corresponding to anatase, rutile, or an anatase/rutile/brookite mixture were obtained at 80 °C by an inverse microemulsion method in a ternary system of water/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/1-hexanol in a weight ratio of 17:28:55.

Clathrate hydrates are among the most intensively studied H-bond inclusion compounds. Despite the broad definition for this class of compounds, their meaning commonly refers to closed polyhedral nanocages that encapsulate small guest molecules. On the other hand, larger solutes enforce another type of encapsulation because of the solute size effect.

In 2017, Michael Nair-Collins formulated his Transitivity Argument which claimed that brain-dead patients are alive according to a concept that defines death in terms of the loss of moral status. This article challenges Nair-Collins' view in three steps. First, I elaborate on the concept of moral status, claiming that to understand this notion appropriately, one must grasp the distinction between direct and indirect duties.
