The objective of this research is to identify the plants consumed and to determine their dietary importance in Áspero, an urban center on the coast of the Supe Valley, Peru. Consequently, starch grains trapped in the human dental calculus of nine individuals were recovered, while the results from one individual from the Sacred City of Caral, located in the interior of Supe Valley, are presented. Eight species of food plants were identified, among them C plants: sweet potato, squash, potato, chili pepper, algarrobo, manioc and bean and C plant: maize.

Objectives: The subsistence system of the first urban centers with monumental architecture from the North-Central Coast of Peru, the core area for the social complexity process of Central Andes, has been debated since the late 1960s. To shed light on this aspect, we report paleodietary data from the two most important sites of the Supe Valley: Caral (3000-200 BC), the major settlement of the middle valley, and Áspero (3000-1800 BC), a notable coastal settlement. Introduction: Bartter syndrome (BS) is a rare inherited tubulopathy that has two presentation forms, the first one is a severe form of antenatal onset (neonatal Bartter) and the second one is a later on set form during the first years of life (classic Bartter). In the antenatal form, it manifests with fetal polyuria, polyhydramnios of early and severe onset, premature delivery, and intrauterine growth restriction. In the postnatal stage, it presents recurrent episodes of dehydration and electrolyte im balance that can compromise the survival of the patient.

This study analyses and compares the genetic signatures of anagenetic and cladogenetic speciation in six species of the genus Robinsonia (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), endemic to the Juan Fernández Islands, Chile. Background: Fabry disease is caused by an X-linked recessive inborn error of glycosphingolipid metabolism with deficient activity of a lysosomal enzyme, alpha-galactosidase A (α-GalA).

Case Presentation: A 46 year-old man with progressive kidney disease showed on kidney biopsy electron microscopic evidence of Fabry disease. The patient had no systemic manifestations of Fabry disease, despite residual α-GalA activity, therefore genetic testing was done by direct DNA sequencing, demonstrating a new GAL A gene mutation (C174G-exon 3).

Background: The purpose of two similarly designed multicenter, prospective, parallel-group, open-label studies was to evaluate early cyclosporine (CsA) elimination versus minimization from an everolimus-CsA-steroid regimen in de novo renal transplant patients.

Methods: Within 24 hours after transplantation, 170 renal transplant patients received everolimus (trough levels 3-8 ng/mL), CsA, and steroids. Those eligible (n = 114) were randomized (1:1) at 3 months to have CsA elimination by month 4 to 6 (±1 week) with everolimus trough levels maintained at 6 to 12 ng/mL or CsA minimization, until 12 months.

The Chilean Puya species constitute a monophyletic group, co-occurring in different species combinations within the country and displaying a remarkable morphological variability. Here, we studied the importance of recent hybridization and introgression in the group and reconstructed the complex inter- and intraspecific relationships. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis, including 109 accessions of all Chilean Puya species and four putative hybrids, yielded 984 characters.

The introduction of mycophenolate as an adjuvant in immunosuppressive regimes has improved clinical outcomes of transplant patients due to a reduced incidence of acute rejection episodes. Nevertheless, the need for dose adjustments or therapy discontinuations (up to 45% in some series), have downgraded the efficacy of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). From October 2003 to April 2005, 36 kidney transplantations were performed at our site.
