Brief Report: Protease Inhibitors Versus Nonnucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors and the Risk of Cancer Among People With HIV.

Background: The effect of initial antiretroviral therapy (ART) class on cancer risk in people with HIV (PWH) remains unclear.

Setting: Cohort study of 36,322 PWH enrolled (1996-2014) in the North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design.

Methods: We followed individuals from ART initiation (protease inhibitor [PI]-, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor [NNRTI]-, or integrase strand transfer inhibitor [INSTI]-based) until incident cancer, death, loss-to-follow-up, 12/31/2014, 85 months (intention-to-treat analyses [ITT]), or 30 months (per-protocol [PP] analyses).

2024 Update of the RECOVER-Adult Long COVID Research Index.

Importance: Classification of persons with long COVID (LC) or post-COVID-19 condition must encompass the complexity and heterogeneity of the condition. Iterative refinement of the classification index for research is needed to incorporate newly available data as the field rapidly evolves.

Objective: To update the 2023 research index for adults with LC using additional participant data from the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER-Adult) study and an expanded symptom list based on input from patient communities.

Twice-Yearly Lenacapavir for HIV Prevention in Men and Gender-Diverse Persons.

Background: Twice-yearly subcutaneous lenacapavir has been shown to be efficacious for prevention of HIV infection in cisgender women. The efficacy of lenacapavir for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender men, transgender women, transgender men, and gender-nonbinary persons is unclear.

Methods: In this phase 3, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled trial, we randomly assigned participants in a 2:1 ratio to receive subcutaneous lenacapavir every 26 weeks or daily oral emtricitabine-tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF).

SmartRoutes aims to enhance users' independence and quality of life by offering comprehensive support for navigation across various settings.

Introduction: Non-unions are fractures that do not heal properly, resulting in a false joint formation at the fracture site. This condition leads to major health issues and imposes a burden on national healthcare systems. The etiology of non-unions is still not fully understood; therefore, we aimed to identify potential systemic factors that may contribute to their formation.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) and endemic coronaviruses (eCoVs) are common etiologic agents for seasonal respiratory infections. The human H1N1 of IAV and coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) can result in hospitalization, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. They infect the epithelium of the respiratory tract by interacting with host cell sialic acid (Sia)- linked receptors whose synthesis is catalyzed by sialyltransferases (STs).

Preening cups are a semi-open water source for Pekin duck enrichment. To evaluate the ducks' affective state, we combined measuring welfare by walking a transect in the barn with mass spectrometry and qRT-PCR to measure brain neurotransmitter levels and gene expression for serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) synthesis and metabolism. 5-HT and DA have been established as indicators of mental state and emotions.

Traffic safety at level crossings in the Czech Republic.

The article deals with the issue of evaluation of the causes of accidents at level crossings in the Czech Republic, including the prediction of the development and proposals of measures for prevention and thus reduction of their number. The goal of this work is to verify the hypothesis that the number of accidents at level crossings in the Czech Republic is decreasing. The authors use available data from the Ministry of Transport and process statistical data for ten years (2013-2022) of railway operation.

Transportation increases circulating corticosterone levels and decreases central serotonergic activity in a sex dependent manner in Pekin ducks.

Previous studies from our lab suggest that transportation of early adulthood ducks can have long lasting physiological effects. To better understand how transportation affects the ducks' physiology, we evaluated several central and peripheral parameters. Thirty-six, 23-week-old ducks were collected at a commercial breeder facility and randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups (n = 6/sex/treatment): 1) caught and euthanized (control), 2) caught and put in a crated in the pen for 90 min (crate), or 3) caught, crated, and transported in a truck for 90 min (transport) to simulate actual transportation.

Proteomic analyses provide insights into the intricate mechanisms of the HA.Our study aimed to identify differentially expressed proteins in relation to the severity of HA, explore their pathophysiological roles, and evaluate their potential as HA biomarkers.

Identification of pharmacological inducers of a reversible hypometabolic state for whole organ preservation.

Drugs that induce reversible slowing of metabolic and physiological processes would have great value for organ preservation, especially for organs with high susceptibility to hypoxia-reperfusion injury, such as the heart. Using whole-organism screening of metabolism, mobility, and development in , we identified an existing drug, SNC80, that rapidly and reversibly slows biochemical and metabolic activities while preserving cell and tissue viability. Although SNC80 was developed as a delta opioid receptor activator, we discovered that its ability to slow metabolism is independent of its opioid modulating activity as a novel SNC80 analog (WB3) with almost 1000 times less delta opioid receptor binding activity is equally active.

The role of infection in signalling root resorption: A narrative review.

Background: Root resorption consists of complex, multistep processes that involve cell signalling caused by inflammation and stromal cells, which promotes the secretion of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand/ macrophage-colony stimulating factor (RANKL/M-CSF) resulting in a resorptive process.

Objective: The aim of this narrative review was to analyse the literature related to root resorption resulting from microbial infection and to comparing it with non-microbial infection.

Methods: An electronic literature search was performed using the PubMed database and applying keywords of articles published in English.

Donepezil Nanoemulsion Induces a Torpor-like State with Reduced Toxicity in Nonhibernating Tadpoles.

Achieving a reversible decrease of metabolism and other physiological processes in the whole organism, as occurs in animals that experience torpor or hibernation, could contribute to increased survival after serious injury. Using a Bayesian network tool with transcriptomic data and chemical structure similarity assessments, we predicted that the Alzheimer's disease drug donepezil (DNP) could be a promising candidate for a small molecule drug that might induce a torpor-like state. This was confirmed in a screening study with tadpoles, a nonhibernator whole animal model.

Curriculum reform and stereotype threat in medical education: Implications for student well-being.

Purpose: Altering the curriculum of a program can have negative repercussions for the student experience, including peer mentorships and interclass relationships. This study investigated the effect of curriculum reform on students' emotional and social well-being in a predoctoral dental program. We explored if any of these consequences could be related to stereotype threat.

Altered transcriptomic immune responses of maintenance hemodialysis patients to the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.

Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients experience immune compromise characterized by complex alterations of both innate and adaptive immunity, and results in higher susceptibility to infection and lower response to vaccination. This immune compromise, coupled with greater risk of exposure to infectious disease at hemodialysis (HD) centers, underscores the need for examination of the immune response to the COVID-19 mRNA-based vaccines.

Methods: The immune response to the COVID-19 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was assessed in 20 HD patients and cohort-matched controls.

Introduction: Portal hypertension (PH) drives the progression of liver cirrhosis to decompensation and death. Hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement is the standard of PH quantification, and HVPG≥10 mmHg defines clinically significant PH (CSPH). We performed proteomics-based serum profiling to search for a proteomic signature of CSPH in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD).

Benign fasciculation syndrome and migraine aura without headache as possible adverse events after BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination: a web-based survey.

Aim: To determine the characteristics of patients who experienced muscle fasciculations and migraine auras without headache after BNT162b2 immunization.

Methods: In January 2022, we published a case report that described a 48-year-old female patient who experienced muscle twitching and migraine auras without headache following BNT162b2 immunization. A self-administered online survey was sent to people who had written to us and complained of similar symptoms described in the case report (N=20).
