Aims: To understand, from the patient perspective, the meaning of living with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and what the patient-desired outcomes of treatment are.

Methods: A qualitative study involving focus group work with 14 participants with a diagnosis of TN was conducted. The discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed using framework analysis.

New insights on the relation between zooplankton and humic substances in tropical freshwater ecosystems.

Aquatic humic substances (HS) represent about 60-95% of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) present in coastal environments of northern Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Although they are important regulators of processes involving aquatic communities, the response of the zooplankton community to their presence remains poorly understood, especially in natural tropical environments. Therefore, our objective was to elucidate zooplankton community responses along a natural gradient of HS.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a painful disorder characterized by sudden electric shock-like pain. It is a rare condition for which multiple treatments are available, including medical and surgical. The best treatment option is yet to be defined, and this is related to the lack of definition in the treatment outcomes and outcome measures.

Is there benefit to continue magnesium sulphate postpartum in women receiving magnesium sulphate before delivery? A randomised controlled study.

Objective: To determine if the use of magnesium sulphate postdelivery reduces the risk of eclampsia in women with severe pre-eclampsia exposed to at least 8 hours of magnesium sulphate before delivery.

Prepartum supplementation of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) increased milk energy output and decreased serum fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate in early lactation dairy cows.

Prepartum supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may influence lipolysis and hyperketonemia in dairy cows. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of prepartum CLA supplementation on lactation performance and serum fatty acids (FA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in early lactation dairy cows, and secondarily on reproductive performance. Multiparous cows were enrolled in the study at 18 days prior to expected calving date, and randomly assigned 100 g/day of Lutrell Pure (BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany; 75% FA), providing 10 g/day of each CLA isomer (trans-10 cis-12 and cis-9 trans-11 CLA) or equivalent amount of rumen inert fatty acids as control (78 g/day of Energy Booster 100; Milk Specialties Global, Eden Prairie, MN).

Introduction Prescribing checklists are a means of managing risk related to systemic medications in oral medicine practice.Methods Checklists for workup and monitoring for azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and dapsone were introduced to an oral medicine clinic. Compliance with the checklists was audited at six and 12-24 months post introduction, and compared to previous clinical practice.

Contraceptive use and pregnancy intentions among transgender men presenting to a clinic for sex workers and their families in San Francisco.

Purpose: Although many transgender men may be able to conceive, their reproductive health needs are understudied.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of transgender men presenting to a clinic for sex workers to describe the proportion at risk for pregnancy, pregnancy intentions, and contraceptive use.

Results: Of 26 transgender men identified, half were at risk for pregnancy.

Literature mentions propyl gallate (PG) as a non-toxic synthetic antioxidant that can be used as a food additive due to its high tolerance to heat. It is important to understand the thermal properties and to identify the decomposition products of this substance, since it has been reported to be thermally stable at temperatures as high as 300 °C. Simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry-photovisual (DSC-photovisual), coupled thermogravimetry-infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) analyses and spectroscopic techniques were used to study the food additive PG.

The effect of seasonality on the structure of rotifers in a black-water shallow lake in Central Amazonia.

Rotifers have often been used as indicators of sudden changes in physical and chemical features of the aquatic environment. Such features vary greatly during flood pulse events in small lakes connected to major floodplains. However, few are the studies that investigate the consequences of the flood pulse in rotifer species composition, abundance, richness and diversity, especially in Amazonian lakes.

Bacterial meningitis is still a major public health threat inside developing countries. In Brazil, the Department of Public Health estimates that the prevalence of bacterial meningitis is 22 cases per 100,000 persons. During the neonatal period, the bacterial meningitis develops special characteristics that can result in hearing problems and movement loss due to neurological and psychological damages.

The aim of this article is to investigate the nature of the relation and of the physician inner life when the doctor meets a patient-doctor, by means of narratives and a qualitative analysis.

Unaltered hepatic oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial permeability transition in wistar rats treated with nimesulide: Relevance for nimesulide toxicity characterization.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been associated with hepatotoxicity in susceptible patients. One such example is nimesulide, a preferential cyclooxygenase 2-inhibitor, widely used for the treatment of inflammation and pain. It was suggested that nimesulide could exert its hepatotoxicity by altering hepatic mitochondrial function, which was demonstrated in vitro.
