Article Synopsis
  • - A pediatric heart transplant patient experienced recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding which led to the discovery of a serious condition called post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) related to Epstein-Barr virus.
  • - The diagnosis of GI-PTLD was difficult and only confirmed after exploratory laparoscopy and the removal of a fistulous tract, which showed signs of PTLD in pathology.
  • - Early detection of GI-PTLD, especially when it occurs only in the small intestine, is challenging and may require advanced imaging techniques like PET/CT or surgical procedures to obtain tissue samples for accurate diagnosis.

Salivary gland carcinomas metastasize to distant organs in 20% of salivary gland malignancies. Applying immunohistochemistry (IHC) measures, salivary gland tumors showed a wide range of oncogene markers expression, including the human epidermoid receptor 2 (Her2/neu), which could be targeted with monoclonal antibody. Treating salivary gland tumors, which have Her2/neu over-expression, with trastuzumab was reported in a few case reports.
