Eleven patients after total pancreatectomy and 68 patients after pancreatoduodenectomy were reviewed for evaluating the importance of nutritional management after massive resection of the pancreas. Nutritional supply by IVH resulted in maintaining and improving the hepatic function under obstructive jaundice in clinical and experimental studies. Administration of elemental diet after the operation shortened the period of IVH, and had a effect to spare the requirement of exogenous insulin.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) is influenced by the central nervous system, cardiac automatism, biochemical factors, etc. Changes in FHR were correlated with the anatomic defect in autopsy material from 20 anencephalic infants, and, on this basis, the following hypotheses were formed, subject to later experimental proof. (1) The FHR baseline level is controlled by the medulla oblongata and vagus nerve.

In view of the fact that the detrusor vesicae and external urethral sphincter perform closely synergic functions in micturition, experiments were conducted to explore the action of the pelvic efferent neurons on the external urethral sphincter. The pelvic efferent neurons are generally recognized, by urodynamic assessments and histochemical study with the technique of retrograde axonal transport of horse-radish peroxidase, to innervate the vesical detrusor. In 7 of 15 adult dogs studied, the external urethral sphincter continued to show a normal synergic electromyogram pattern with enhanced electrical activity on vesical distention and disappearance of discharges on vesical contraction even after bilateral transection of the pudendal nerves.

Paired extraluminal strain gauge force transducers were implanted in the urethra to measure separately and simultaneously both longitudinal and transverse movements of the urethra. The advantage of our paired strain gauge force transducers is that both longitudinal and transverse changes of urethral movements can be detected.

Thirty-nine hemiplegic patients were evaluated by complete urodynamic study after cerebrovascular accidents. Computerized tomography was performed to identify localization of the brain lesion. The common urinary symptoms were frequency and urgency incontinence (26/39), while 13 patients complained of dysuria or urinary retention.

This paper presents a study of urethral responses to efferent nerve stimulation in dogs. The pelvic, hypogastric and pudendal nerves were stimulated using a programmed instrument under three different in vivo conditions. The preparations consisted of: (A) bladder, urethra, and rectum; (B) urethra and rectum, and (C) urethra only.

We made a new modified catheter for voiding cystourethrography to evaluate the function of the external urethral sphincter. Using this catheter, we can evaluate it precisely, excluding the influences of the posterior urethra. The findings of voiding cystourethrography observed by using this catheter were equal to the findings of the simultaneous recording of cystourethrogram and external urethral sphincter electromyogram, and permitted us to assess the function of each portion of the urethra separately, such as the sphincteric urethra (prostatic urethra) and external urethral sphincter (membranous urethra).

A new synchronous video urodynamics to evaluate the function of the lower urinary tract is described. The urodynamic study together with the transrectal longitudinal ultrasonotomography of the bladder and urethra can be seen on the colour display monitor through the display controller. An image on the colour display monitor is also stored on the video cassette recorder.
