The paper gives the current aspects of the etiology and pathogenesis of acute tonsillopharyngitis and its complications. Correct evaluation of the clinical manifestations of the disease is noted to be of importance in choosing adequate treatment policy and preventing unfavorable trends in the development of the disease. Antibacterial therapy for streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis is emphasized to be of significance.

Analysis of the literature data has shown that the anomalous vascular structure is one of the important risk factors of the development of intra- and postoperative hemorrhage, besides redundant blood supply of the oropharynx, inflammatory changes in the tissue of tonsils and peritonsillar region. Special attention is given to the peculiarities of diagnostics of such conditions.

The present paper summarized the recently published data on the prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, and treatment of otogenic intracranial complications. The results of statistical analysis of the prevalence of otogenic intracranial complications are presented in conjunction with the data on their structure and the frequency of selected nosological forms. The authors emphasize the importance of the problems concerning the choice of the therapeutic strategy for the management of otogenic intracranial complications.

The importance of the adequate medicamental treatment of the main components of the inflammatory process in the outer and middle ears is emphasized. The medicinal products possessed of local antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities are shown to have advantages over other preparations used for the management of the above pathologies.

This publication deals with the problems pertaining to the improvement of the system of the post-graduate education in otorhinolaryngology with special reference to one of its topical fields, clinical rhinology. The authors emphasize the importance of one of the principal components of the post-graduate education under the present-day conditions, namely organization of control and self-control of learning the new material, self-monitoring and individual correction of the level of knowledge. Special attention is given to the training tests that can be used to adequately simulate the decision-making process with respect to a concrete clinical situation.

Among the patients presenting with various forms of exterior nasal deformities, the olfactory thresholds were especially elevated in those suffering from rhinoscoliosis due to deflection of the nasal septum and disturbances of nasal breathing. Moreover, the elevation of olfactory thresholds was documented practically in all the patients with acute sinusitis and in 76.

The analysis of statistical information concerning PT/PA prevalence revealed a tendency toward the increase of the number of emergency interventions for the treatment of PA that may be attributed to the reduction in the number of planned tonsillectomies as well as to the absence or inadequate organization of regular medical check-ups of the patients presenting with chronic tonsillitis. The structure of selected complications of PA is described with special reference to the prerequisites for the development of pyo-necrotic lesions in the soft tissues of the neck and tonsillogenic sepsis.

This study included 20 patients presenting with polypous rhinosinusitis examined before and after endoscopic intervention in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Nitric oxide (NO) content in nasal secretion and polypoid tissue was estimated from the concentration of nitrates that, together with nitrites, are the final products of oxidation of nitric oxide and serve as markers of endogenous NO. Nitrates in the nasal secretion, endonasal mucosa, and polypous tissue were determined by the ionometric technique.

New data are presented indicating that the electron paramagnetic resonance technique can be used to study nasal secretion paramagnetic centers. In the study 53 subjects, who were not exposed to industrial aerosols during their professional activities, were examined. It was demonstrated that nasal secretion contained paramagnetic centers bound with iron- and copper-containing proteins in the concentrations which were significantly lower than plasma had.
