Objective: To investigate control options for contagious ecthyma (scabby mouth) in Australian sheep exported live to the Middle East.
Design: Prevalence, vaccination and modelling studies.
Procedure: One hundred and forty weaner sheep (less than 1 year old) on each of 106 farms in Western Australia (WA) and 18 farm groups of adult wethers received at a WA commercial feedlot were examined for lesions of scabby mouth.
Aim: To compare a thromboxane antagonist (GR3219) with aspirin in patients with prolonged chest pain and ST segment depression to see if the frequency of attacks of chest pain was reduced.
Methods: The trial was part of a study comparing GR3219 with aspirin, and streptokinase with placebo and comprised the GR3219/aspirin leg. Thirty one patients were randomly assigned to GR3219 80 mg twice daily and 28 to aspirin 300 mg daily.
Objective: To confirm the validity of a previously described method for assessment of infarct artery patency involving serial measurements of creatine kinase activity by use of troponin T concentration as an independent plasma marker.
Design: Streptokinase (1.5 x 10(6) units) was given intravenously to 60 patients within 6 h of onset of prolonged chest pain and ST segment elevation, and blood was taken for measurement of troponin T concentration at baseline and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h after starting treatment.
The capacity of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS2) to detect and define individual components in a complex mixture has been utilized to develop a quantitative assay of the potent immunosuppressant drug, tacrolimus. Trough blood concentrations were measured in 175 samples obtained over several weeks after liver transplantation from seven patients. The assay was linear over the range of 0.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAtopic dermatitis is characterized by elevated serum IgE concentrations and dysregulation of T-lymphocyte function. To examine the pattern of cytokine production associated with elevated IgE levels, phorbol ester plus ionomycin-stimulated production of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by blood mononuclear cells from 16 patients with atopic dermatitis was compared with that of 18 healthy subjects. Spontaneous in vitro IgE production was also studied longitudinally in patients receiving placebo or daily treatment with 0.

Methods: 112 patients aged < or = 75 years presenting within 6 h of the last episode of ischaemic chest pain of least 20 min duration with > or = 1 mm ST depression were randomised in a double blind manner to receive either streptokinase 1.5 million units over 30 min (n = 57) or placebo (n = 55).

Three automated immunoassays for digoxin in serum were evaluated--Abbott TDxII, Baxter Stratus, and Behring OPUS. The accuracy and precision of the assays were assessed by weighed-in controls and an external quality control program. Coefficients of variation of all methods in serum were < or = 10% at weighed-in concentrations of digoxin of 1 and 2.

Methadone is being prescribed increasingly as an analgesic in palliative medicine. R-Methadone has been shown to be responsible for most of the pharmacological activity of this drug. Despite that in most countries it is administered as the racemate.

The aim of this study was to compare whole blood cyclosporin A (CsA) concentrations measured by both mFPIA and HPLC in liver and heart transplant patients. One hundred and twenty-four liver and 62 heart transplant patient samples were assayed by both methods.

The proportion of patients in the medical treatment group who had undergone CABG surgery was 25% at 5 years, 33% at 7 years, and 41% at 10 years: 93.

The Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a complication of ovulation enhancing technologies that is becoming more prevalent with increasing use of these techniques in infertile women. In this report, we describe a 36-year-old woman who presented to the Emergency Department with hemodynamic compromise secondary to OHSS. The OHSS is characterized by ovarian enlargement, ascites, electrolyte disturbances, hypotension, and thromboembolic events.

Serial coronary angiography showed multiple progressive coronary artery dissections, which eventually involved both the right and left coronary trees. Persistent cardiogenic shock necessitated emergent orthotopic heart transplantation.

As part of the sampling program the problem of concern, or reason for sampling, needs to be clearly stated and objectives specified. The development of a conceptual model will assist the clarification of objectives and the choice of indicators to be sampled.

However, independent long-term prognostic value of infarct artery patency has not been shown.
Methods And Results: We followed 312 patients with first myocardial infarction treated < 4 hours after pain onset with thrombolysis (streptokinase [n = 188] or recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator [n = 124]).
