The pathophysiology of the blunted febrile response often seen in elderly individuals with infection is not well understood. In this study, we attempted to determine the impact of aging on prostaglandin E2 release from the brain in response to endotoxin (LPS) stimulation. Eight young (4-6 month) and eight old (24-28 month) BALB/c mice were studied.

Human liver cDNA encoding a protein S precursor was isolated from two cDNA libraries by two different techniques. Based upon the frequency of positive clones, the abundance of mRNA for protein S is approximately 0.01%.

Antimouse antibody is produced from 40 to 68% of the time after administration of Orthoclone OKT3. In patients treated with OKT3, however, if the concomitant immunosuppression is not decreased, the incidence of the antibody production is reduced to 40%. Similarly, 33% of patients developed antihorse antibody after the initial antithymocyte globulin (ATG) administration.

OKT3, a murine monoclonal anti-T-cell antibody, was used to treat acute renal allograft rejection crises in 140 patients. When used for primary treatment of initial rejections, it was effective in all 20 recipients of related-donor (RD) grafts and in 70 of 74 recipients of cadaver-donor (CD) grafts. OKT3 was also used for resistant rejection unresponsive to conventional antirejection drugs and was effective in 11 of 13 RD and in 26 of 33 CD recipients.

We characterized five amikacin-resistant variants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from aortic valve vegetations during unsuccessful therapy of experimental endocarditis. These organisms were cross resistant to other aminoglycosides. No aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes were produced by these strains.

MR imaging of 15 paragangliomas in 10 patients was compared with CT of 13 of the lesions in eight patients. All lesions were confirmed with angiography. All lesions were detected by MR and CT with the exception of one small glomus tympanicum tumor that was seen only in retrospect with MR.

Many physico-anatomic variables and instrument parameters influence the relative magnetic resonance signal intensity of vascular channels. The interaction of these mechanisms is complex, but their composite effects can be accounted for by two main categories of flow phenomena: time-of-flight effects and spin-phase changes. Of these two mechanisms only the time-of-flight effect known as flow-related enhancement produces augmentation of intravascular signal.

The magnetic resonance (MR) images of 28 patients with surgically confirmed pituitary adenomas were retrospectively evaluated. The examinations were performed on a 1.5-T superconducting MR system using a multisection spin-echo technique with 3-mm-thick sections and a 256 X 256 matrix.

Over 35 intraaxial lesions in 15 patients suspected of having intracranial tumors were studied with MR before and after injection of Gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA). Diseases included primary and metastatic brain tumors, plaques of multiple sclerosis, occult arteriovenous malformations, lymphoma, toxoplasmosis, and pituitary adenoma. The precontrast T2-weighted sequence (SE 2000/30, 60) was found to be most sensitive in detecting intraaxial lesions, showing 17 lesions that were not seen on the post-Gd-DTPA T1-weighted sequence (SE 500/30).

The Eating Attitudes Test, Social Adjustment Scale: Self-Report (SAS-SR), and Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) were administered to 18 normal-weight bulimics at 1- and 3-year follow-ups. Eating attitudes and depressive symptoms improved significantly at year 1. There was no significant improvement on the SAS-SR at year 1.

Masses at the craniovertebral junction generally have serious prognostic implications. However, the authors studied three patients who had chronic atlantoaxial subluxation from either degenerative disease or congenital dysplasia of the dens and who also had benign fibrous masses in this region, confirmed at surgery. The association of masses of the craniovertebral junction with chronic atlantoaxial subluxation raises the possibility that the underlying cause of the masses is chronic mechanical irritation.

Murine, polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, raised against sporozoites of Eimeria tenella, were tested for their ability to neutralize sporozoite infectivity in vitro and in vivo. Neutralization was effected via three mechanisms. Firstly, sporozoites fixed complement, at low titres, and lysis occurred by the alternative pathway of complement activation.

Review of all normal magnetic resonance (MR) scans performed over a 12-month period consistently revealed punctate areas of high signal intensity on T2-weighted images in the white matter just anterior and lateral to both frontal horns. Normal anatomic specimens were examined with attention to specific characteristics of this region. Three unique features typify the brain tissues that correspond to the foci of high signal.

Ciprofloxacin was compared with ceftriaxone in a rabbit model of septic arthritis caused by Escherichia coli. Both agents significantly reduced mean E. coli counts in septic joint fluid (P less than 0.

Eleven patients with 15 angiographically occult arteriovenous malformations were studied by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT). Five patients had biopsy proof; six were clinically diagnosed from the long-term clinical follow-up (more than 3 years) and imaging features. Of the 15 lesions, 11 were recognized by both CT and MR.

A total of 664 urine samples collected from 254 asymptomatic, ambulatory, elderly men was examined for pyuria with a standardized glass slide microscopy method. The presence or absence of more than 10 polymorphonuclear leukocytes per high power field was highly predictive of the presence or absence of significant bacteriuria, respectively. The determination of pyuria in this select population may be a useful and inexpensive test to screen for bacteriuria.

The unprecedented gray/white differentiation obtained with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has created a unique opportunity to trace the normal process of myelination. Fifty-nine children referred for evaluation of a nonneurologic problem or a nonspecific neurologic complaint were studied with MRI using spin-echo technique. Children ranged in age from term (40 weeks intrauterine) to 16 years.

The nonionic contrast agent iohexol was compared with the ionic agent iothalamate for contrast enhancement of brain tumors and radiation brain damage in dogs. Tissue enhancement during infusion of contrast and 5, 10, 15 and 30 min later was measured using quantitative computed tomography. Blood iodine was measured using x-ray fluorescence.

This retrospective study was performed to assess the capability of magnetic resonance (MR) to depict and characterize diffuse and focal radiation lesions in the brain using the spin-echo technique. The MR images of 55 patients who had undergone radiation therapy were reviewed. Comparative computed tomography (CT) studies were available for all the patients.

A questionnaire survey of 550 female medical, business and law students revealed that 12% met criteria for bulimia. The bulimic students reported significantly more social maladjustment than their non-eating disordered peers. Frequency of binging and purging was associated with the degree of social impairment, with significant social dysfunction being noted on the overall scale at a minimum binging/purging frequency of once weekly.

This retrospective study was performed to describe the appearance of intracranial hemorrhagic lesions on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 0.35 tesla using the spin-echo technique, and define the present clinical role of MRI in this particular pathology. Forty-eight examinations of forty-three patients with forty-seven intracranial hemorrhagic lesions (39 true hematomas and 8 hemorrhagic lesions mixed with other tissues) were reviewed for this study.
