Background: Kidney failure disproportionately affects older blacks versus whites. The reasons are unknown and may be related to lower measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and higher levels of albuminuria in community-based population samples.
Study Design: Cross-sectional analysis of a substudy of a prospective cohort.
Objective: The aim of this report was to describe the reproducibility of arterial elasticity parameters derived from radial artery diastolic pulse contour analysis.
Methods: Two measurements were taken on the same day by the same technician with the HDI/Pulsewave CR-2000 System on each of a subset of participants selected randomly from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. Large and small artery elasticities (C1 and C2), C1 and C2 each multiplied by systemic vascular resistance (C1xR and C2xR, which are functions of the radial artery pulse waveform only), and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP) were evaluated.
Aim: To estimate an equivalent to the Modified Mini-Mental State Exam (3MSE), and to compare changes in the 3MSE with and without the estimated scores.
Methods: Comparability study on a subset of 405 participants, aged >or=70 years, from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a longitudinal study in 4 United States communities. The 3MSE, the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) and the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE) were administered within 30 days of one another.
Studies of DNA may yield important information about atherosclerosis. To determine how often study participants' consent to examine DNA is denied and the factors associated with that denial, information was collected on participants in the US Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) during 2000-2004. Permission was sought for preparation of DNA, transformation of cells into cell lines, evaluation of genes related to heart and other health conditions, and access to DNA by private companies.
