Article Synopsis
  • A 15-year-old boy with a history of herpes zoster virus infection presented with a central corneal scar in his right eye, reducing his vision to 20/200 after a year of no improvement from medications like oral valacyclovir and topical corticosteroids.
  • Upon examination, the right eye showed significant corneal opacity without vascularization, while the left eye had a macular scar but no corneal issues.
  • The case raises questions about potential surgical interventions, such as phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), corneal transplantation options, and setting up prophylactic treatments to ensure proper healing post-surgery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reason that diabetic retinopathy (DR) is delayed from the onset of diabetes (DM) in diabetic mice. To this end, we tested the hypothesis that the deleterious effects of DM are initially tolerated because endogenous antioxidative defense is elevated and thereby confers resistance to oxidative stress-induced death. We found that this was indeed the case in both type 1 DM (T1D) and type 2 DM (T2D) mouse models.
