Purpose: To determine whether human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) genomic DNA and mRNA can be detected in ocular samples from patients with inflammatory disorders, and whether viral replication is involved in the development of inflammation in the eye.
Methods: After informed consent was obtained, ocular fluid samples (aqueous humor and vitreous fluids) were collected from 350 patients with uveitis or endophthalmitis. Corneal samples were also collected from 65 patients with corneal infections.

Purpose: To estimate the incidence rate of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery performed by Japanese surgeons.
Methods: A sample of 20% of members of the Japanese Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons was randomly selected. Each member was sent a postal survey asking for information on the number of cataract surgeries performed in 2003 and the number of postsurgery cases of endophthalmitis.
Purpose: To demonstrate human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) in Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) of the conjunctiva in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Methods: Clinical observation, pathologic findings of conjunctival specimens, immunohistochemical staining for HHV-8-specific antigen, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of HHV-8 DNA, and detection of specific antibody in patient's serum at appropriate times.
Results: In the conjunctival specimen, swollen endothelial-like cells were found with slit-like vessels.
Purpose: To identify ocular complications in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), who have a propensity to progress to acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Methods: Forty-one patients with MDS were the subjects in this retrospective study, and 21 patients with AML were selected as controls. Reviewing their clinical records, we verified that corneal ulcer, iridocyclitis, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhage, and optic neuritis had been evaluated using slit-lamp assessment and opthalmoscopy in all the patients.
Purpose: We examined eyeballs collected from autopsied acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients with cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, and analyzed the precise pathogenesis of CMV retinitis.
Material And Methods: Eyeballs were fixed with 10% buffered formalin embedded in paraffin. CMV antigens were investigated by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses.
