Article Synopsis
  • Denosumab is a new treatment for bone disease in multiple myeloma patients, but there are concerns about atypical femoral fractures associated with its use.
  • A case involving a 71-year-old woman highlighted that she developed these fractures after resuming high-dose denosumab, even after a short treatment period.
  • The case emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to be aware of early warning signs of fractures in patients treated with denosumab, particularly those with multiple myeloma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how physical activity influences pneumonia risk in patients recovering from surgery for esophageal cancer, specifically after a radical esophagectomy.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 83 patients, tracking their physical activity during the subacute recovery phase (postoperative days 8-10) to see if it affected pneumonia development from day 11 until discharge.
  • Results showed that patients who took fewer than 1494 steps per day had a significantly higher chance of developing pneumonia, highlighting the importance of physical activity for improving surgical recovery outcomes.

All the currently used type A botulinum neurotoxins for clinical uses are of subtype A1. We compared the efficacy and safety for the first time head-to-head between a novel botulinum toxin A2NTX prepared from subtype A2 and onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX) derived from A1 for post-stroke spasticity. We assessed the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) of the ankle joint, the mobility scores of Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and the grip power of the unaffected hand before and after injecting 300 units of BOTOX or A2NTX into calf muscles.

Objectives : The aims of this study were to examine the biomechanics of StandTS movements in older adults and to identify their optimal StandTS motion by measuring sitting impact forces. Methods : Healthy older women (n = 17) and healthy young women (n = 18) were asked to perform SitTS and StandTS motions at a natural speed using a chair. We measured the ground reaction forces from the participants' feet and the chair, the angle of the trunk and ankle, vertical velocity, and postural muscle activities using a force plate, motion analyzer, and electromyography, respectively.

Objectives: Patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) have a higher risk of falls than those receiving other therapies for haematological disorders. This study aimed to investigate the impact of pretransplant lower extremity muscle strength (LEMS) on post-transplant falls.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients aged ≥18 years who underwent allo-HSCT were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters in healthy adult lower leg muscles and analyze how these parameters correlate with muscle power in various contraction types.
  • DTI measurements were taken from 10 healthy adults during three conditions: non-contraction, isometric contraction, and soleus shortening, using a 3-T MRI scanner, and results were statistically analyzed.
  • Significant changes in DTI parameters were found depending on muscle contraction type, with notable correlations between these parameters and muscle power measurements, particularly in the soleus muscle during non-contraction.

Objectives: Muscle strength decline is reported to predict mortality in many cancers. However, there is little knowledge of the relation between muscle strength decline and clinical outcomes of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This study aimed to determine the impact of pre-transplant lower extremity muscle strength (LEMS) on post-transplant overall survival (OS) and non-relapse mortality (NRM).

Background Context: Hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum (LF) is a major contributor to the development of lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS). Although previous studies have identified some factors related to hypertrophy of the LF, the etiology remains unclear. It is well known that myofibroblasts have a key role in the pathology of fibrosis in other tissues, including the skin, liver, kidney, and lung.

Connective tissues such as tendon, ligament and cartilage are mostly composed of extracellular matrix (ECM). These tissues are insoluble, mainly due to the highly cross-linked ECM proteins such as collagens. Difficulties obtaining suitable samples for mass spectrometric analysis render the application of modern proteomic technologies difficult.
