The pollution conveyed by roof runoff originates from two potential sources, migration of surface material constituents, or wash-off of pollutants deposited on the surface by atmospheric deposition. Archaeological and archaeogenetic evidence points to the Pontic-Caspian steppe zone between the Caucasus and the Black Sea as the crucible from which the earliest steppe pastoralist societies arose and spread, ultimately influencing populations from Europe to Inner Asia. Synthetic stormwater was tested to determine the ageing effects on dissolved metal concentrations and used in a column experiment to determine efficiency of four different filter materials (milkweed, bark, peat, polypropylene) in removing total and dissolved metals. Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine who received the Prize between 1969 and 2011 are compared to a matched group of scientists to examine productivity, impact, coauthorship and international collaboration patterns embedded within research networks. After matching for research domain, h-index, and year of first of publication, we compare bibliometric statistics and network measures. We find that the Laureates produce fewer papers but with higher average citations.

P-sorbing filter beds appear to be viable options for treating wastewater to reduce P discharges and recover this non-renewable resource. A comparative study of five methods measuring suspended sediment or solid concentrations in water-sediment mixtures indicated that, depending on the method used, broadly varying results can be obtained. For water-sediment mixtures containing sand size particles, the standard TSS method produced negatively biased results, accounting for 0 to 90% of the present solids; the negative bias directly depended on the magnitude of the sand fraction in the water-sediment mixture. The main reason for the differences between the TSS and the rest of the methods laid in the handling of samples; in the former methods, whole samples were analysed, whereas the TSS analysis was performed on sub-samples withdrawn from the water sample, the withdrawal process tending to exclude large particles.

Conclusion: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a viable and safe option for early laryngeal cancer that would be less suitably treated with radiation or trans-oral laser surgery (TLS). The cure rates with PDT appear to be comparable to those of conventional therapy, and the voice outcomes are also comparable. In the case of many sarcomas, PDT appears to be an organ- and function-sparing therapy, although it is more costly than other treatments.

This exacerbates drug resistance and exacts a high burden from acute respiratory tract, bloodstream, sexually-transmitted, diarrheal and other infections. The coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is a cell adhesion molecule expressed in epithelial tight junctions and other cell-cell contacts. Using indirect immunofluorescence, quantitative RT-PCR, and Western blots, the expression and distribution of CAR in developing and adult testis are examined. CAR is highly expressed in both Sertoli and germ cells during perinatal and postnatal development, followed by a rapid down-regulation of both mRNA and protein levels.

Aneuploidy (trisomy or monosomy) is the leading genetic cause of pregnancy loss in humans and results from errors in meiotic chromosome segregation. Here, we show that the absence of synaptonemal complex protein 3 (SCP3) promotes aneuploidy in murine oocytes by inducing defective meiotic chromosome segregation. The abnormal oocyte karyotype is inherited by embryos, which die in utero at an early stage of development.
