Direct observation of spin rotation in Bragg scattering due to the spin-orbit interaction in silicon.

As a neutron scatters from a target nucleus, there is a small but measurable effect caused by the interaction of the neutron's magnetic dipole moment with that of the partially screened electric field of the nucleus. This spin-orbit interaction is typically referred to as Schwinger scattering and induces a small rotation of the neutron's spin on the order of 10 rad for Bragg diffraction from silicon. In our experiment, neutrons undergo greater than 100 successive Bragg reflections from the walls of a slotted, perfect-silicon crystal to amplify the total spin rotation.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) intoxication causes or contributes significantly to many of the fatalities among fire victims. To enable fast treatment of HCN poisoning, a more rapid diagnostic method than currently available is required. One possibility would be measurement in exhaled air.

Purpose: The goal of this controlled serial study was to investigate the outcome of a simplified procedure with one-stage surgery, four Brånemark implants, shortened healing time, and a new titanium-acrylic fixed full prosthesis.

[A new surgical method: lengthening of jaw bone by means of distraction technique].

Callus distraction, or distraction osteogenesis as the method also is called, is a new surgical technique which makes it possible to create new bone by bone elongation. The method was originally used in orthopedic surgery to extend long bones but has subsequently proved useful for extending the mandible as well as other bones in the facial skeleton. By callus distraction, it is now possible to treat severe jaw anomalies and also to treat bone defects in the jaws without bone transplantation.

Observation of polarization in bottomonium production at square root of s = 38.8 GeV.

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at square root of s = 38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state shows no polarization at small values of the fractional longitudinal momentum x(F) and transverse momentum p(T) but significant positive transverse production polarization for either p(T)>1.

Titanium implants and onlay bone graft to the atrophic edentulous maxilla: a 3-year longitudinal study.

Treatment of the atrophic maxilla using an onlay bone-grafting technique in combination with simultaneous insertion of endosteal implants (Branemark System) was performed in 17 patients. They were followed during a 3-year period. At the end of this period, 14 patients had stable bridges in use and one patient had an overdenture.
