Article Synopsis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can lead to under-diagnosis of macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), a severe complication; this systematic review aimed to identify triggers and mortality factors associated with MAS in SLE patients.
  • A comprehensive search across multiple databases revealed eight studies highlighting key risk factors, including lupus flare, high SLEDAI scores, infections, medications, malignancy, and pregnancy that could precipitate MAS.
  • MAS was linked to increased ICU admissions and mortality, with specific indicators such as elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) and altered liver function tests suggesting poor prognosis; the review noted limitations due to a lack of prospective studies and study variability, emphasizing the need for further research.
