Predicting segregation of multiple fruit-quality traits by using accumulated phenotypic records in citrus breeding.

In the breeding of citrus (Citrus spp.), suitable fruit quality is essential for consumer acceptance of new cultivars. To identify parental combinations producing F1 progeny with fruit-quality traits exceeding certain selection criteria, we developed a simple and practical method for predicting multiple-trait segregation in an F1 progeny population.

[Community Child-Rearing Support Scale: Applicability across generations and differences in the supportive behaviors among generations].

Objectives　Using the Community Child-Rearing Support Scale (CCRSS), which was developed for older adults, we examined 1) the reliability and validity of the scale for multiple generations, as well as the generational differences in the 2) degree and content of supportive behaviors for child rearing and 3) correlates of the behavior, in conjunction with gender differences.Methods　A mail survey was conducted with residents aged 25-84 years who were randomly selected from two cities in Tokyo and the surrounding areas, and responses were obtained from 8918 residents (response rate: 33%). The respondents were grouped as follows: old-aged (65-84 years), middle-aged (50-64 years), and young-aged (25-49 years).

Co-existence of social isolation and homebound status increase the risk of all-cause mortality.

Aim: Identifying factors that influence participation in social group activities in older adults might be helpful in promoting social participation in this population. We examined factors related to new or continuous participation in social group activities according to group type.

Methods: We carried out a community-based, longitudinal study with a 2-year follow-up period.

The multidrug-sensitive budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 12geneΔ0HSR-iERG6, is very useful in antifungal screens. A novel compound, named pestynol (1), was discovered from a culture of the fungus Pestalotiopsis humus FKI-7473 using the multidrug-sensitive yeast. The structure of 1 was elucidated by NMR studies and modified Mosher's method as (1 R,2 R,3 R,4 R)-( E)-5-(7,11-dimethyl-3-methylenedodeca-6,10-dien-1-yn-1-yl)cyclohex-5-ene-1,2,3,4-tetraol.

Pochoniolides A and B, new antioxidants from the fungal strain Pochonia chlamydosporia var. spinulospora FKI-7537.

New natural products, designated pochoniolides A and B, were isolated from the cultured broth of fungal strain FKI-7537 using a physicochemical screening methodology. Strain FKI-7537 was isolated from a soil sample collected at Niijima, Tokyo, Japan and identified as Pochonia chlamydosporia var. spinulospora by morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analysis.

Hepatic Pseudolymphoma with Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake on Positron Emission Tomography.

A 69-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis B was admitted to our hospital with a hepatic tumor. The levels of 2 tumor markers, carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9, were slightly elevated; however, the α-fetoprotein and protein levels induced by vitamin K antagonist II were within the normal limits. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a well-defined peripheral hypoechoic mass that was isoechoic and homogeneous on the inside.

The current electrophysiological study investigated the functional roles of high- and low-voltage-activated Ca channel subtypes on glutamatergic small mossy fiber nerve terminals (SMFTs) that synapse onto rat hippocampal CA3 neurons. Successful Treatment of Protein-Losing Enteropathy and Plastic Bronchitis by Biphasic Cuirass Ventilation in a Patient with Failing Fontan Circulation.

We present a 16-year-old male patient with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who developed protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) and plastic bronchitis (PB) after a Fontan operation. He received medical therapies, including albumin infusion, unfractionated heparin, and high-dose anti-aldosterone therapy but could not obtain clinical relief. Biphasic cuirass ventilation (BCV) led to expectoration of bronchial casts and prompt resolution of PB.

Ultraviolet Laser Lithography of Titania Photonic Crystals for Terahertz-Wave Modulation.

Three-dimensional (3D) microphotonic crystals with a diamond structure composed of titania microlattices were fabricated using ultraviolet laser lithography, and the bandgap properties in the terahertz (THz) electromagnetic-wave frequency region were investigated. An acrylic resin paste with titania fine particle dispersions was used as the raw material for additive manufacturing. By scanning a spread paste surface with an ultraviolet laser beam, two-dimensional solid patterns were dewaxed and sintered.

Effect of different methods for conserving rice grain on in situ ruminal degradation and in vivo nutrient digestion and rumen fermentation in steers.

We investigated the effects of different rice conservation techniques on in situ ruminal degradation and in vivo nutrient digestibility and rumen fermentation in steers. Raw rice grain was dried before crushing (DRY), ensiled after crushing (ENS-A), or ensiled before crushing (ENS-B). Six ruminally cannulated steers were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with three dietary treatments: diets containing DRY, ENS-A, or ENS-B at 36% of the dietary dry matter.

Hamuramicins A and B, 22-membered macrolides, produced by an endophytic actinomycete Allostreptomyces sp. K12-0794.

Two new compounds, designated as hamuramicins A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the cultured broth of an endophytic actinomycete Allostreptomyces sp. K12-0794 by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated as 22-membered macrolide containing triene and trienone with an alkyl side chain by spectroscopic analyses including NMR experiments.

Quellenin, a new anti-Saprolegnia compound isolated from the deep-sea fungus, Aspergillus sp. YK-76.

Saprolegnia parasitica, belonging to oomycetes, is one of virulent pathogen of fishes such as salmon and trout, and causes tremendous damage and losses in commercial aquacultures by saprolegniasis. Previously, malachite green, an effective medicine, had been used to control saprolegniasis. However, this drug has been banned around the world due to its mutagenicity.

Tolyprolinol, a new dipeptide from Tolypocladium sp. FKI-7981.

A new dipeptide, named tolyprolinol, was isolated from the static culture of a fungus, Tolypocladium sp. FKI-7981. The structure of tolyprolinol was elucidated as N-acetyl-L-phenylalanyl-L-prolinol.
