Article Synopsis
  • HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy (ART) are vital in fighting HIV/AIDS, but stigma significantly hinders access to these services among older adults in rural South Africa.
  • The study used a multivariable logistic regression analysis on data from HAALSI, showing that higher social stigma scores correlated with decreased likelihood of HIV testing and ART uptake, with notable decreases in odds for individuals with higher stigma levels.
  • With 85% experiencing anticipated stigma and 25% facing social stigma, the research underscores the urgent need to address stigma to enhance testing, diagnosis, and treatment efforts, aiming to meet UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for HIV care.
