Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated risk factors for severe complications in patients undergoing laparoscopic liver surgery for tumors in specific liver segments from 2009 to 2019.
  • Key findings indicated that a tumor size of 3 cm or more, segmentectomy, and liver cirrhosis significantly increased the risk of complications after surgery.
  • Patients without these risk factors experienced lower complication rates, less blood loss, shorter surgery times, and shorter hospital stays, suggesting they are better candidates for this type of surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Around 8,300 hemophiliacs are registered in Japan, but there's a lack of comprehensive data on hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeries (HBPS) in these patients, prompting this study to explore their current surgical outcomes.
  • The study analyzed 49 hemophiliac patients who underwent HBPS between 2007 and 2017, focusing on their backgrounds, types of hemophilia, surgical procedures, and any complications encountered post-surgery.
  • Results showed that common procedures included limited resections for liver cancers and standard operations for pancreatic cancers, with complication rates for hemophiliac patients not significantly higher than those in the general population when surgeries are conducted at specialized centers.

Although several risk factors for incisional hernia after hepatectomy have been reported, their relationship to different wound sites has not been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the risk factors for incisional hernia according to various wound sites after hepatectomy. Patients from the Osaka Liver Surgery Study Group who underwent open hepatectomy using combinations of vertical and horizontal incisions (J-shaped incision, reversed L-shaped incision, reversed T-shaped incision, Mercedes incision) between January 2012 and December 2015 were included.

In 2003, Chicago Public Schools introduced double-dose algebra, requiring two periods of math-one period of algebra and one of algebra support-for incoming ninth graders with eighth-grade math scores below the national median. Using a regression discontinuity design, earlier studies showed promising results from the program: For median-skill students, double-dose algebra improved algebra test scores, pass rates, high school graduation rates, and college enrollment. This study follows the same students 12 y later.

Purpose: We aimed to clarify the normal values obtained by simultaneous use of shear wave imaging and strain imaging (combinational elastography) in liver and reveal how aging influences them.

Methods: In our checkup center, 257 examinees were diagnosed with normal liver based on questionnaires about liver disease and their drinking history, liver function test results, and ultrasound B-mode study findings. We estimated the values of combinational elastography and considered the correlation between the values and age.

Article Synopsis
  • About 30% of colorectal cancer patients develop liver metastases, and this study focused on the role of CD200, an immunosuppressive molecule, in these cases.
  • The study analyzed 110 patients who had curative liver surgeries, dividing them into high-CD200 and low-CD200 groups based on their CD200 expression levels.
  • Results showed that patients with high CD200 expression had significantly worse overall survival, suggesting that CD200 is an important factor in predicting outcomes and could be targeted for therapy in colorectal liver metastases.
