Artificial intelligence in heart valve disease: diagnosis, innovation and treatment. A state-of-the-art review.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to improve the precision of valvular heart disease diagnosis and treatment. It has the ability to identify and risk stratify patients with valvular heart disease and holds promise in improving the innovation of new treatments through shorter, safer and more effective clinical trials. AI can help to guide the treatment of patients with valvular heart disease, by aiding in optimal device selection for transcatheter valvular interventions and, potentially, predicting the risk of specific complications.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Diagnosis of Pyocele: A Rare Complication of Testicular Infection.

Epididymo-orchitis is one of the common causes of acute scrotal pain that requires an accurate diagnosis as delayed management can result in complications such as pyocele, abscess, or testicular infarction. Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) has emerged as a valuable diagnostic tool in the management of testicular emergencies in the emergency department (ED) including testicular infections CASE REPORT: Here we report a case of an elderly man who presented to the ED with a complaint of right-sided testicular pain and swelling. The diagnosis of pyocele was made using a PoCUS, facilitating an early referral to urology services.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation complexity score.

Background: Increasing demand for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) places greater emphasis on the efficiency of pathways and services. A significant limitation to increasing TAVI capacity is the availability of cardiac catheterisation laboratory time. We have developed a novel complexity scoring system (TAVI ComplEXity; TEX score) which can aid in planning lists with appropriate case selection.

Feasibility test of per-flight contrail avoidance in commercial aviation.

Contrails, formed by aircraft engines, are a major component of aviation's impact on anthropogenic climate change. Contrail avoidance is a potential option to mitigate this warming effect, however, uncertainties surrounding operational constraints and accurate formation prediction make it unclear whether it is feasible. Here we address this gap with a feasibility test through a randomized controlled trial of contrail avoidance in commercial aviation at the per-flight level.

Fundamentals of emergency care support: a blended learning model to improve emergency and trauma care in a low-income country.

Background: The burden of time-sensitive illnesses that require emergency care, such as heart diseases, respiratory tract infections, and road traffic injuries, is the leading cause of premature deaths. The healthcare providers of the emergency care system lack the essential knowledge and skills across different healthcare levels in our country. In this paper, we aim to describe the development and initial implementation of a blended learning curriculum for teaching and training non-EM-trained physicians working in the emergency departments of our country.

Impact of plant monoterpenes on insect pest management and insect-associated microbes.

The fight against insect pests primarily relies on the utilization of synthetic insecticides. However, improper application of these chemicals can lead to detrimental effects on both the environment and human health, as well as foster the development of insect resistance. Consequently, novel strategies must be implemented to address the challenges stemming from the prolonged use of synthetic insecticides in agricultural and public health environments.

Seed priming with a composite of iron oxide (FeO) and silicon dioxide (SiO) nanoparticles (NPs) is an innovative technique to mitigate cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) uptake in plants from rooting media. The current study explored the impact of seed priming with varying levels of FeO NPs, SiO NPs, and FeO-SiO nanocomposites on Cd and Cr absorption and phytotoxicity, metal-induced oxidative stress mitigation, growth and biomass yield of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.).

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has recently become a major concern for agroecosystems. The interplay between MPs, and heavy metal(loid)s in the soil can intensify the risks to plant growth and human health. The current study investigated the interactive effects of arsenic (As) and biodegradable and petroleum-based conventional MPs on rice growth, As bioavailability, soil bacterial communities, and soil enzyme activities.

Geographical Inequality in Access to Aortic Valve Intervention in England: A Report from the UK Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Registry and National Adult Cardiac Surgery Audit.

Background: For patients with severe aortic stenosis, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a less invasive but equally effective treatment option compared with surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). In 2019, we reported low rates of TAVI in the UK compared with other countries in western Europe and highlighted profound geographical variation in TAVI care. Here, we provide contemporary data on access to aortic valve replacement by either TAVI or SAVR across clinical commissioning groups in England.

Association Between Aortic Wall Thrombus and Thromboembolic Events After Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

Background: Thromboembolic events, particularly strokes, remain a major complication of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Embolic protection devices have failed to show significant clinical benefit in large randomized clinical trials. Aortic wall thrombus (AWT) is often observed on multidetector computed tomography during TAVR work-up, but its prognostic significance is uncertain.

Video based educational intervention in waiting area to improve awareness about health screening among patients visiting family medicine clinics.

Multi-method computational evaluation of the inhibitors against leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 G2019S mutant for Parkinson's disease.

Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 G2019S mutant (LRRK2 G2019S) is a potential target for Parkinson's disease therapy. In this work, the computational evaluation of the LRRK2 G2019S inhibitors was conducted via a combined approach which contains a preliminary screening of a large database of compounds via similarity and pharmacophore, a secondary selection via structure-based affinity prediction and molecular docking, and a rescoring treatment for the final selection. MD simulations and MM/GBSA calculations were performed to check the agreement between different prediction methods for these inhibitors.
